Has Anyone Heard of Dried Up Oil in Forks?!

Have any of you ever heard of or seen dried up oil in forks?! I bought a 1990 KDX200 parts bike a couple of years ago, and I finally got around to trying to disassemble the forks and cleaning and inspecting them this past weekend. When I got the fork cap off, the inside of the cap looked like dark brown dirt. I looked inside the tube and it looked the same. I turned the fork upside down and the spring spacer and spring seat fell out, but not one drop of oil came out. I pulled the springs out and the removed parts look like dirt or maybe dried up oil caked on them. The inside of the fork tube is the same way. If anyone has some information to share, I would be glad to hear it!

Sounds like someone used Quaker State for fork oil  No I personally have never seen anything like that. Not that - that means anything.
Engine cleaner or kerosene should work to clean it up.

I have been letting them sit in kerosene for about two weeks now. I am giving them a time out.

OK, three months of soaking didn't do the trick, so they are in the trash. My advice to anyone who buys a parts bike is to go through it all as soon as you can and throw away things that are not worth fooling with.
