Who's comparing?

These fuggers keep talking like a 450 is too much bike for tight woods

You see more 450's in the woods here than any other bike period

That may be where you are, Wibby, but not around here. Mainly KTM 200, 250, and 300's, and a lot of Japanese 250 2T MX'ers. Yeah, there are quite few 450's but the KTM 2T's outnumber them by a lot.

Now, I don't think the 450's are too much power for the woods. My issues with the 450's is that they are heavier feeling and therefore less flickable for me in tight stuff like the KDX250 is. Also, the compression braking and gyroscopic effect of the 4T engine are just not for me. Would I ride a 450 4T in the woods? Yes! Would it be my first choice? No, they just don't work as well for me as other options that are available.

In oregon especially, people were hit by the 4 stroke craze. 4 stroke this, 4 stroke that, wtf ever. 450's when ridden slow are usable, but when they replicate a 2 stroke power band then things start to get messy fairly quick. Actual trail 4 strokes do their job fairly well, but who wants to ride slow?

same here.......you know, wibby is right. my 200 felt like a 125 when i rode it. in other words, i had to be "on the pipe" if i tried a "power hill" ! the 200 wore me out quicker than any bike, because i was constantly working the clutch, and trying to put the power to the ground, and keep enough speed to make the hill. i dont have that problem on my 2 stroke ktm's.............or my xr400 "SLOW TRAIL BIKE" ....MY :butthead: ........

You want a kdx to climb hills? Get a 220 moded - it blows peoples minds - it won't fall off the pipe like the 200.

About 450's - no disrespect to anyone, but on really tight nasty single track nobody likes a 450 anything...it's just too much work. My nephew is an ISDE rider, was district 36 #2 cross-country - still gets too tired on his CR450F....the constant turns, roots just wear you out. I had a sweet WR426, modded for single track and it just wasn't fun when you inevitably get tired.

I'm on my 7th KDX over a 26 year span...2 220's the rest 200's and I love them all. High tailing the 200's or grunting up the nasty's on the 220 - can't beat em. I've owned several KX250's that were converted to cross-country racers, yz's, CR's, and none are as versatile as the kdx with USD forks for tight single track.
I've just finished upgrading a 97 KDX200 and I'm riding the wee out of it - it's like a completely different bike from the 220 - actually more fun to jam on, I think, except for really technical hills.

Oh, yeah, and there is no better bike to get you home when you are wiped out and in survival mode....

blasphemy! Some one else one here already said that KDX's are only good for flat ground! There is no way that a 450 of any sort could be looked down upon when in the tight woods! Pure blasphemy!

An xr400 puts out about the same power as a kdx! The 220 slightly modded would keep up on the straights no issue. My friend picked up an xr400 and sold it immediately because of the fact it was slow, handled like ****, and was gutless.

I love my outdated bikes for the most part. Just certain areas where some updates would be nice.

Here we go again. For me its the other way around, I just gave my dad my KDX  . As for outdated bikes, anything is possible, but the newer the bike the better parts availability its going to have. Simple as that. The fact that I can replace every single part on my 03 yz250 if I need to is alone worth it..

It does, but for what it is its expected. Its a 200cc enduro machine that weighs roughly 240lbs wet. The xr400 has roughly 200 more cubic centimeters and hell of a lot more weight. What does that say? The KDX runs off of 80's tech and is an okay motor, but all it is really is is an inexpensive toy that you can have fun on. That's why this forum was made, thats why people ride any year KDX despite parts availability, and thats why people support the bike so much. Oh, anything older than 2006 is considered outdated, and as for four strokes, anything older than a year is inferior and useless

the topic of this forum was............what makes the kdx the "perfect trailbike?"
for one, the kdx may be the perfect trailbike for certain people, and certain trails, but its not the perfect bike. there are alot of other bikes out there with more torqe, power, handling, suspension that the kdx. dont get me wrong.......i liked my kdx.......but i didnt love it. it was just to short on power for my kind of riding. im just saying that everyone dont ride just kdx's..........and im just getting tired of hearing crap about every "other" bike out there. everywhere on here im reading " 450's suck"....."450's have to much power for the woods"......"all other bikes are outdated"......"kdx will fly- 4 strokes are slow" ...........im just trying to say that kdxrider.net should be about people getting togeter, riding and talking about riding.............NO MATTER WHAT YOU RIDE! :partyman: thats all

Uh, it is. However, it is a web forum dedicated specifically to the KDX so you should expect people to praise and love KDX's. What did you think you were going to hear?

Now, you know I haven't been on here bashing 4T's, you, or anything else for that matter so please take a moment, step back, and take a look at how wound up you are letting yourself become over this. You need to lighten up a bit and quit taking this **** so personally.

kdxmaniac wrote:the topic of this forum was............what makes the kdx the "perfect trailbike?"
The topic was actually what makes the KDX "THE" woods bike.

And it started out comparing it to 250cc mx bikes.

The topic got WAY the hell off when people started bringing up all the other woods bikes in the world. Yes there is many many bikes out there that have more power, better handling, better anything else you want to talk about.

The KDX being "THE" woods bike started years ago and even then it was not that you couldn't find a better bike, more that the KDX was a cheap (What, about $3200 brand new in the mid ninetys?) and made good power, easy to ride and held up well. When parts did break they were priced cheap compared to some others. You could bring it home ride it around the yard once then open up the air box and change a few jets and make a very nice power increase with little to no money.

So, No the KDX is not the perfect woods bike. Yes there is better bikes out there. But of those better bikes how many can you learn how to ride on, better the bike cheaply as your experience builds, and still have fun with after you have been riding for a while.

Maybe it should be changed to "THE" woods bike for recreational riders.

The facts are the facts. They hold up well, ride like the couch, and can do most anything the other bikes can with the right rider and work done to it.
