power valve ?

Post by tc358 »

just bought 87 200 kdx,i have a basic understanding how valve works,
my question is,how can you tell if it is working, never had 2-stroke with
a power valve

first time ride in woods yesterday, not alot of low end power, but very
impressive powerband on top end. THANK YOU

Pull the exhaust off and look through the exhaust opening. Move the lever by hand, and watch for the 3 valves in there to move in sync.

If you wanted to, you could disable the power valve, then ride your bike. This would give you something to compare the performance of a properly performing power valve to. What you would feel is a significant loss of power at one end of the power band - the top end power would be lost if the valve was stuck closed, and the bottom end power would be significantly reduced if the valve components were stuck in the open position.
If you suspect that you components are not functioning correctly, or if you just want some reassurance that they are, do what Julien said. There really is no other way to confirm proper operation, aside from full dis-assembly and reassembly.
