where to send cylinder?

Post by kdxmaniac »

my 98 ktm 380 is low on compression. the cylinder looks good, BUT, put a new piston and rings in it, and it still blows 160psi......... to low. want it around 210psi. where is a good place to send the cylinder to get it replated?

millenium tech, langcourt, and powerseal are all good. The only one to watch out for us U.S. Chrome.

Seems silly to replate if it's in spec? Of course, "looks good", doens't mean "in spec". Has the cylinder been measured??

yes, the cylinder is out of spec just a hair. what i ment by "looks good" is there is no lines, marks, or hot spots in the cylinder.

Aha. Well good for you on the preventative maintenance then!

I only have personal experience with langcourt, millennium tech, and US Chrome. Avoid the latter. US Chrome supposedly used to be good, but now not so much. Langcourt and MT both do excellent work!

This is very strange as I have used US Chrome many times and have always been nothing but pleased with the quality. The experiences I have had have all been perfectly flawless plating jobs. :supz:

All the bad comments and horror stories I have heard about replating always came from US chrome.
Try a search and you'll see.
If it was a single isolated event, no big deal but more than 3 times, sumthing is up, and on top of that, their customer service sucked.
i went with powerseal and I was very satisfied.

I was satisfied with lancourt for a bore/hone job done for another bike. I didn't have any plating done but I will send my kdx cylinder to them if/when the time comes.

Just do a google search. You'll find more than you can read in a week. My personal experience with US Chrome was them billing me well over $300 to replate a 125 jug, and sending it back to me with the ports still needing extensive chamfering, excessive pitting in the plating, and just generally shitty looking work. Others have reported the plating actually flaking off in big chunks. We sold that 125, so I can't report on how it held up. Everything I have gotten back from Langcourt and Millenium has been flawless.

Man this is so strange, I have had many cylinders done by US Chrome and they have all been flawless! It has been almost two years since I needed to have a cylinder plated, so maybe something has changed over there?
I have no relationship with them, I have just been a customer several times, I don't want anyone to think I am covertly promoting them.

Things like this always seem to come up though: For instance some people will tell you how Eric Gorr is great, but I can tell you an absolute horror story about my experience with that guy! So who knows?

I have heard many a horror story from Eric Gorr myself. I know lots of people love the guy, but I wouldn't send anything of mine to forward motion.

As for U.S. Chrome, it does seem to be the last 2 or 3 years that they have been having trouble. As a matter of fact, EG stopped using them a couple years ago after having lots of trouple. So did Fredette, or so I heard. Several years ago U.S. Chrome was THE option for cylinder repair in the states. I think they got slack, being the only shop in town. Other companies started doing much better work, and these days U.S. Chromes name = mud.

Yeah, and sounds like EG should've taken a lesson. I don't think he does the work there anymore, but could at least QA it to know that junk is getting sent out. When he was the guy to touch your motor, the work was great.
