24mm is too big and 13/16 is too small. Looks like it may be a 7/8th. Does that sound right? (it's still an ellusive member of my tool chest)

A rough SAE to metric conversion-

5/16 = 8mm
1/2 = 13mm
9/16 = 14mm
5/8 = 16mm
3/4 = 19mm
13/16 = 21mm
7/8 = 22mm
15/16= 24mm

This can depend on the brand of wrench and fastener as far as how good it fits but for the most part these are very close to the same sizes.

Heya Guys! Thanks for your help so very much!

The new shaft is in & looking very tidy with the new gear lever too!

My steep learning curve continues with another symptom presenting itself which I hope you can help me with...

I have put it all back together with new gaskets & new clutch cable.
I noted the adjustment at the bottom of the clutch cable needed to be maxed out to get any tensionin the cable & required further adjustment at the clutch lever.
The clutch lever felt "heavy" (as she's been sitting in the shed for a while & not out on the track, I must confess putting it down to lack of conditioning  )
She started beautifully in nuetral. I engaged the clutch & as soon as I put her into gear she leaerched forward & stalled, as I'd expect if the clutch was not working at all.

What could I have missed, or what could I have stuffed up on the journey??

Cheers again!!!!!

You have got something out of order when you reassembled the clutch plates into the basket.

I usually have to do mine three times before I get it right.

Fortunately, it should not involve taking the clutch basket off again, just work through the outer clutch cover.

Do you have a manual?

There's no adjustment at the bottom of the cable

The clutch basket was removed but never disassembled & the plunger is back in - no spare parts left over.

Wibby probably identified the problem. There is a washer that fits between the basket and the clutch hub. If you didn't take the clutch pack/hub out of the basket, you may not have noticed that washer. It's possible that it dropped down between the basket and hub but now isn't on the shaft. This could cause the problem you're describing.

Good job on digging right into your motor--it's a little intimidating at first, but these 2-stroke motors really are pretty simple.
