KDX wont start!

Post by Fatherof2 »

Hi Gang,

Bought a KDX last fall, and spent all winter taking her apart and fixing her up. Finally got her all back together tonight, and she wont start.

If I hit her with some starter fluid, she will fire for about 5 seconds and then die out.

Fresh gas, freshly cleaned carb, fresh oil, gas is on, new plug, kick starter is very firm.

Any thoughts? I am pretty bummed.

Thank you for any help,

David

Stuck float? Try laying it down on its side and see if gas runs out the vent lines. If it does try starting it. If it is firing on starter fluid (You should not ever use starter fluid) than it has to be in the fuel delivery or the timing would have to be WAY out of wack. Have you checked the plug? Is it wet or dry? It could be possible to be getting too much fuel and flooding out.

Well, she finally fired!

Dont know what the deal was. Let her sit for a few minutes while I was thinking things over. Threw my leg over, gave her a kick, and viola!

Rode around the block a few times. Throttle response is not crisp. Lots of power, but she bogs a bit in the first three gears. Time to start to figure out what that is all about.

Thanks for the input guys!

Go back and make sure your ground connections are clean and tight. If they aren't it can cause all sorts of weird little problems.

The bike has 16 miles on it, and is bone stock.

Ensure air filter is clean/oiled. Fresh gas....Mixed with regular old 2-cycle oil....Switch to full synthetic later. Read up here on jetting. I would suspect super-rich jetting, and that your top-end isn't broken in yet. Warm up fully, Go ride the crap out of it....Flogging it through the 'blubber' If it cleans up and gets a good bit better through the ride, your rings just seated well.
