Oil change intervals

Post by G22inSC »

I have a quick question. I use to change the oil every ride or every other ride; however, I now have an hour meter installed. How many hours should I replace the oil at?

It is personal preference, and really depends on your riding style. I good gear box oil will last awhile before it starts to break down. I usully change mine about every 4 hours of ride time. The oil is usually still good, so I may start doing it 5-6 hours. I use (and sell) Motul Transoil Expert for all of my 2-stroke bikes and have never had any problems. Good luck!

4 hours of ride time?

So do you stop out on the trail and do an oil change?

I probably go 12 + hours of ride time between oil changes.

I don't want to strip my drain plug, ya'know.

I look at it this way. If the bike had a dry clutch on it(trans oil literally only oils the gears) the oil would last A LONG FRIGGIN TIME. Thousands of miles. What warrants the oil change is clutch material getting into the oil which will now cause wear on the gears if you don't get it out.

Heavy clutch flogger like you go through a couple of clutch packs a season or more? Change every 'ride.'

Your clutch lasts years? Do it when you're attending to other maintenance.

FWIW, I just use SAE30 and change every 10-20+ hours. Going on a 5-day trip @ 8hrs a day? Don't sweat it. Change after. Ride 10 different days for an hour a piece...That's when I'll do it at 10. That's all rough....It's not important enough to keep anal track of.

Lol...yes I do!!! I have not been able to ride much lately so in reality those 4 hours may last a very long time. When I ride, I usually go pretty hard and it tends to break down the oil quicker.

The oil on my streetbike does double duty that of the KDX, since it is for both the motor and the clutch, and I change it every 4,500-5,000 miles

I change my KDX oil about every 4 - 6 months

I do it every month so it's about 10-15 hours but I use "cheap" valvoline" 10w40; it's pretty dark when I change it.
