I am not sure, but the voltage regulator may need to be bolted to a ground source....

most relocate it on the front of the air box when they toss the lid, no need to have it grounded.

Does removing it really make a big enough difference to notice it? I thought about just using some of those small round filters Wib and scheckaet showed me.

Makes a lot of noise

I think a lot of people equate more noise to being more power

+1
however, I think the important thing is to get the carb tuned right whether or not you remove the lid.
Even with lid and snorkel the bike should rip if it's tunned right.

the cdi is mounted to the airbox lid..i bolted mine to the front of the airbox (i also coated the rear of the cdi with extra silicon sealer to prevent any water from finding its way in)..my kdx runs better with the lid on & snorkle removed as i only use my bike for woods riding, that and the fact the filter stays cleaner for a little longer..i decided to keep the cdi mounted to the front of the airbox as its easier to remove the lid when cleaning/replacing the air filter rather than have it flopping about whilst attatched to the cdi..
