KDX250 - Should I?

Post by SS109 »

One of my club members has a '94 KDX250 for sale for a whopping $450! I am still trying to get my car up and running but this is such a deal it is killing me! It is a good running bike from what I hear (haven't checked it out in person yet). It looks a little rough but not that bad IMO. He says it has about 20 hours on the current top end and he has owned the bike for 8 years.

What do you guys think?

i agree 450 is a hell of a deal, around here for something that runs and that looks this good you'd have to pay at least 2x that.

Well, I'm going to go check it out tomorrow. BTW, it has a clean title as well! You just can't hardly buy any bike here in AZ for under $1k with a title. If everything checks out OK I'll be bringing it home.

I'd be all over it!

Might even be a good opportunity to buy and resell to help get that vehicle up and running a bit quicker (as long as you have one to drive now).

I thought about flipping it but I don't think I could do it. I mean, the guy is giving me a helluva deal (he feels it is worth $800). If I bring it home I will probably keep it for a while and see if my son would like it. Maybe just keep it as a buddy bike. I guess we'll see.

BTW, I have been doing some research on the KDX250 and it seems just about everything is available other than plastics and decals. That is always a plus!

I remember reading somewhere that there is a way to shed some pounds from this bike. I can't find it now. Does anyone know the thread I'm talking about?

I wouldn't worry too much about shedding weight. Fix the front forks, throw a KX head gasket on it, and ride!

That would be a nice motor to build a hybrid with at some point.

With a little work, that will make a great dual-sport bike! The hard part (Title) is already done!

He already put in stiffer springs. I don't know what rating yet but anything is better than stock! I have never heard about the KX head gasket swap. Is it thinner and therefore raises compression?

That is what I'm thinking!

It probaby will end up street legal.

Yes, the KX head gasket is thinner and raises compression. From what I hear it's a pretty popular upgrade on the 250.

I've seen some SM kdx250's that look SWEET.

Go for it. I paid $700 for mine and it wasn't nearly that nice.

Yes, it has a few drawbacks: Weight, suspension, jetting issues, etc.

But, it isn't as bad as some reviews make it sound.

You'll love that motor. It's kind of like a cross between a kdx220 and a 250 mx'r.

Love mine too. Like nearma said, the motor rips, and it's not such a bad trade-off for the extra weight. The jetting is easy to fix with a little time and money, I don't find the suspension too bad either but I'm no expert rider. The bike just does what I want it to do every time I ride.

I can't see how you could go wrong. You could part it out and make money if nothing else! I wouldn't but you could. That would go for at least $1000 around here. People want $1000 for a bike that wont run around here.
