Stuck in Gear

Post by exbee »

I was out ice racing today and I noticed my bike starting to get harder to shift, after a while it got stuck in 4th gear and would not shift up or down. Not sure if this could be a minor problem or something major. I'm sure you guys can give me a list of things to check?
It's a 93 KDX 250 by the way.

Thanks

Check these, kind of in order:

1) Look closely at the shift lever. Make sure it is not hitting the case or frame when it is moved all the way up or down. Make sure it is clamped tightly to the shaft, and all of the splines are OK.

2) Inspect the shift pawl assembly. Make sure the spring did not fall off, and that the pointed "teeth" of the pawl are in good condition. They break sometimes (any bike).

3) Beyond these two items, you will be required to remove the engine and split the cases to inspect the shift forks and shafts, and the gear dogs and teeth.

I have been having trouble with my shift lever, won't tighten anymore but I didn't think that would be the problem. Maybe I'll try replacing the shaft and lever before splitting cases.

Thanks
