Just picked up an 86 IT200 in Great Condition

Post by ldspowersports »

I will post pics tomorrow, it was too dark out to see. Picked it up from someone local who has owned it for 20 years. Stock everything, and still has all of the OEM plastic, odometer, and even the headlight and tailight work. I only paid $500 for it. Since I am a dealer for DC plastics I think I am going to restore this one and get all new plastic for it. The stock plastic is in good shape, just the usual fade. The suspension and brakes are all very tight. It starts on the first kick! Anyone ever own one of these? It seems like a good bike for the woods and I had an IT175 which was a fun bike!

I had an old IT175 and that bike flat out hauled ass. If the 200 is anything like it it should be an awesome bike! Congrats!

I owned a 1985 IT200. I wish I had the '86 for the front disc brake. I loved the IT. The tank was a bit bulbous, but otherwise, it was fine. The suspension was quite good, even with the 43mm damper rod forks. The rear suspension worked really well. I rode the bike quite hard, so hard, in fact, that I hit a big G-out one day, and broke the cylinder right off of its base mounting studs. It still ran well enough for me to get home! I was amazed at that one. A new cylinder cost me almost $400 at the time. After installation of the new cylinder, I removed the head steady to prevent similar occurance.
Come to think of it, I also lost the spark once due to a bad pulsar coil. I think that one was $75.00.
I always like the looks of the IT's, and I owned a 1976 IT400C, a 1978, and 1979 250 as well. I wish that they would bring back the baby blue and yellow color scheme, (and the 6 speed gear boxes on 250 2 strokes...)

Great low end and lighter than the KDX. You will be amazed of it's trail manners.

Yes, it lugs as good as the KDX. It actually feels lighter. I had an 85 KDX 200 once, and it feels very similar to that one, but with better suspension. The front brake works well, and this thing starts first kick. It sits a tiny bit lower than a KDX does. The only minus of the entire bike is a rear drum. I have only been able to ride it briefly as it is only 22 degrees here with a light snow covering. I took it around the pond a few times, seems like it is going to be a great secondary bike, or I may even restore it. It wouldn't take much. I am not sure why Yamaha stopped making these bikes. If they had slightly upgraded components I bet they would still sell well, especially with that bulletproof motor. Heck, they were in the Blaster's forever and could be built to run quite well.

About ten years ago I was riding through Hungry Valley about 60 miles north of Los Angeles, on a trail route that was sand, rock, hills and mild jumps. I was on a new XR400. While riding well, I was passed like I was standing still by a guy on a pristine 86IT200. The guy bought the bike new and never sold it. It was blemish free, appearing as though it never left the garage. More to the point, the bike was so simple, light and offering the right amount of engine performance. Years ago, Dirt Bike once commented it was to be considered one of the best used bikes on the market. Are there still parts being offered by Yamaha

Yep, there are lots of parts still. DC Plastics carries a lot of of them. Since I am a distributor for them...well you know - time to put it to use! :)

I see WR200's 2-3 times a year around here, but never "cheap". They are always $700-1000. That's not cheap to me, lol.

I always liked IT200's. A guy was selling a 1985 recently for $100 but it was sold within minutes after he posted the ad.

The WR was a good bike as well, with its inverted forks and electric power valve system. It was heavier than the KDX, though.
While I like the IT and WR 200's, for the price most of them go for, I would just pick up a clean KDX.

Here is a link to a pic of it. The plastics are faded like most, but a full new set is on the way, along with factory decals. Everything is tight on this bike. I cleaned it up last night, and the original paint on the shock spring, frame and other areas is in great shape. The gold annodize on the rims is also very good after I cleaned the chain lube off. I am going to try and clean up the gas tank, but sometimes those are hard to make look good again. We will see. I will show progress on my blog as I go. Below is a link to my blog where I posted pics. Let me know what you think, can't wait for it to warm up so I can log some trail miles on this old - but good bike

I'd take it... and I wouldn't worry about drum brakes on the rear... I use the fronts 99% of the time....

The rear fender looks to be sitting at an odd angle. You may want to take a closer look at its mounting. The blue plastic looks well faded, but you may be able to polish it out.
Nice bike!

It looks like the part of the subframe that holds the fender is bent up. It can be bent back down easy.

New Plastics coming soon. That fender is bent, and cracked on top. I already started to sand down the gas tank. I should be finished with plastic, and cleanup next week. I will post pics when I do. It will look like a new bike.
