KDX200 trade for ATK450?

Post by wbdisco »

Don't know much about these bikes. A guy offered to trade his 2005 ATK450 for my 2000 KDX200. Are these bikes worth a crap or would I just be kicking myself for getting rid of my tried and true KDX?

? Seems kind of strange to want to give up a newer bike for an older one.

ATK is cool for being american made, and I think they have some pretty nice stuff. I'd never trade my super reliable trail friendly 2 stroke for a 450 4 stroke, regardless of make. the ATK is likely to be a headache on wheels, where the KDX is gas it up and ride.

Same here. I just can't see myself letting go of my KDX...ever!

Well with a little more research it sounds like an awful idea, I guess the appeal of having an American made bike doesn't outweigh the PITA that comes along with it. Besides when i sold my 89 KDX i swore I would never sell another one.

Yeah. I'd like to have a 450 4 stroke in the garage. Don't know if I'd ever actually ride the thing though. Could be fun in some of the places we ride, but in most, I'm sure I'd be wishing I'd brought the KDX. I think a kx500 will come 1st. And then an RD350 :)

FWIW, I think that's a Rotax 4-stroke(one I may consider owning), and likely full ohlins suspension.

The 2005 ATK 450 is leftover stock from the defunct Cannondale bike with the head mounted backwards and fuel injected. Atk suposedly worked out the problems Cannondale had with FI gremlins, but there is not much support for the bike now. Don't trade ! Better yet, tell him you'll haul it off for free, then put you KDX motor in it. Nobody else has that hybreed!

^^^Indeed klammer is correct. The Rotax stopped in 03. Unfortunately they stopped using the rotax 260 2T also which was a great motor.

I would *not* trade my trusty KDX for an '05 ATK 450 - conditions being similar. The only ATK I would be interested in would be a big Rotax 600 four stroke dual sport, and even then, there are better choices, IMO.
My brother had a Husqvarna 260. It was an odd bike - smooth, linear power, but not much of it. The Rotax 250's and 260's could be made to run quite well, or so I've heard. I never heard much about the 125's, but I think that they all had vacuum operated power valves, which were odd all on their own.
The '05 ATK uses a refined Cannondale design, I think. Reviewers never had much good to say about the originals...IIRC. Lots of mechanical noise, and questionable reliabilty?

Haven't heard how you intend to use it. That might make a difference. In tight quarters a 222 pound KDX will kill it. Desert riding - advantage ATK. Moneywise - it's a no-brainer.

If this is it, I'd trade or buy it for a grand or so.
It would be kinda cool to have one as a conversation piece.

Being a 1970's Motocross racer, Maico has a special place in my heart.

I raced a 1977 250 Adolf Weil replica. Light years above the competition!

In the late '90's there was a guy that raced at our local MX track in the Expert Class on a 490 Mega 2. He would lap the field, and on the last lap he would stop and salute the crowd on the top of a jump right before the checkers.

He could lap the entire Expert Class on a 18 year old bike! Class act!
