Hi. My countershaft seal lip is cut(broken) at one place so I need to repace it.I have heard some method to remove the seal but witch is the better? How YOU did it?

I am down for 2 weeks because my finger came between the chain and rear sprocket when my wheel was turning!Where is my nail? eh......

so this is the time to replace the seal.

I will order a new seal,bushing and 2 orings.

Ouch! Just use a dental pick and pull the seal out. Don't forget to put grease on the seal when you reinstall it.

From m0rie's comment, the KDX is one bike that you can replace the seal from the OUTside?

92049-1068

BuyKawi shows this as the seal for the '89..and it is placed from the outside.

92050-033

..is the 'H' PN, different part, but placed the same way...from the outside.

By 'dental pick' you are referring to a mechanic's scribe sort of thing, right?

That looks like:

If so, get a good one. The cheaper choice is not the best. Usually black in color, they break/bend quite easily. Get a silver colored one.

Now THERE'S some technical info for 'ya..the COLOR matters!!

OK. From my experience, the black ones are not worth it..and I've paid a whole lot less than five bucks!! More like $1. Maybe $5 is the CAN price!

I feel your pain Philippe, I put my first 2 fingers through the front sprocket on my BMX when I was younger. I had 'back pedal' brakes and had to turn the sprocket 1 revolution to get my fingers out.

Back on topic.

Can you pick the seal out with the output shaft in place ??

Why replace the seal? Think of it, an automatic chain lubricator!! You will benefit in two ways:

A) you will never have to lube the chain again

B) you will be forced to "add" tranny oil often, leaving a clean tranny with the new constant replacement oil.

Yeah the counter shaft stays in place. Check the collar while you have the seal out. If its grooved at all your going to want to replace it as well or the seal will just start leaking again.

Finger between any chain and sprocket got to hurt!!

If a dental pick doesn't work for you and there is any sort of metal outer housing on the seal drill a small hole in the outer metal housing install a metal screw about 1 turn into the seal and pull it out with pliers. Usually works better with two screws located 180 degrees apart.

Disclaimer - I don't think I've ever changed a counter shaft seal on a KDX - they may or may not have a metal seal to tap into. - Good Luck and Heal Quickly

Hey, you are supposed to use other peoples fingers for CRYING OUT LOUD.

How about the chain grabbing your Levis Jeans, and pulling your KNEE into the Front SPROCKET

Left a 4 inch hole on top of my knee, could touch the knee cap. Well 50 something stiches & 27 yrs later, still works

It looks like the screw was threaded in plenty far enough to take out the bearing!

No worry! everything was perfect.I threaded the screw more just for the picture purpose

Morie: The collar was grooved just a liitle but I bought a new one anyway.

It seems that we can not reverse this collar because on one side there is a special place for the orings.

'Ya know...I actually considered that a possibiity!

Curious: How tight is the collar fit to the shaft? It just slipped right off? I'd think THAT would be more of a stickage problem than the seal.

The collar slipped right off... with a long nose pliers.yes.No loose, Is it normal?

The collar turn with the sprocket,correct?

The seal was really worn (17 years old) and the outter lip was broken at one place.

I presume the point is to have the seal wear a hole/ring in the sleeve as opposed to the shaft!

I would also presume the collar would fit fairly snug, else what purpose would it serve in oil control (well, some o-rings)! AND, if it was loose, what's that going to do wear-wise, metal to metal with the collar in place and the countershaft spinning?

Why that 'snug' wouldn't turn into 'stuck like glue'...I don't know.

Sorry to reserrect this thread but am I right in thinking the oil seal on the H model comprises of 2x O-rings ?? I can't seem to see a seal like Phillipe has pictured.

Nevermind, just realized I ordered 92055-035 and NOT 92050-033. Off to the stealership AGAIN...

FTR To change a H model leaky countershaft seal the following parts should be ordered.

92050-033 = OIL SEAL (like pictured above)
92055-035 x2 = O-RINGS
92143-1433 = SLEEVE/COLLAR

All done and sorted. Philippe you did very well to drill the seal. My seals metal edge was tiny and even with the smallest hole my screw just pulled out. I ended up bending the seal enough to pry it out. I'd like to see a dental pick / scribe pull it out. It was in there good, REAL GOOD !!
