First Dirtbike

Post by ThE_HAMMER »

Hey guys I'm new to dirt biking in general. I just bought my first dirt bike ever, a 1997 KDX 220r. In fact this is the second dirt bike I've ever ridden although I've been on four wheelers all of my life. I haven't personally done any modifications yet, but the previous owner put about $2200 into it. I've only put 23 miles on it and that was mostly trying to learn the clutch. I can't wait to get it into some woodsy areas in Tennessee.

Welcome! For being a noob you sure picked a great first bike!

As you'll learn from 220 owners here, the stock piston in the 220 is faulty and needs to be replaced before it cause serious engine damage. Hopefully, some of that $2200 he invested went into a new top end.

Welcome! You should enjoy the light, easy to manage KDX after being on big quads. The only quads I'll touch are the manual clutch, preferrablly 2-cycle variety  :supz:

Well I did read about that piston and asked the owner about that and he said that the stock one was in there, do you think I should buy a wiesco or is another brand better?

I run a late 90's Honda CR style clutch perch and lever on all my green bikes. I read that in Motocross Action Magazine years ago and I really like it. It has a good feel, light pull and the clutch doesn't drag.
