Back in 1987, my dad converted from a Husky and bought an '88 KDX. It was the first full-size bike I'd ever ridden.

He rode it for 10 years or so in the local enduro circuit and used it when marking trail for the local series. In 1998, he and mom moved to Kansas and it sat dormant in their garage for another 10 years. It was never started or moved. During this time, I bought my own bikes; first a '99 KTM 200 EXC, then an '06 KTM 250 XCW.

Finally, in 2008, dad offered me his old trusty '88 KDX as he had no use for it anymore. I gladly obliged and took it on as a restoration project. I did some light maintenance (changed fluids and fork seals) and to my amazement, it started on the second kick after 10 years!!

I took it on a few small trail rides, but it was obvious by the way it ran that it needed a little more TLC. With so little compression that it can almost start itself, I come here, hoping for some guidance along the way

Guide you, they will. Welcome. (Some will offer plenty of sarcasm in the process.)

Welcome! A 2-stroke that's low on compression should be very hard to start....or at least not idle well. Need to do a comp test. On a motor that old a leak down test would be wise as you'll never tune out a leaking crank seal. These bikes start easy. If it starts, and idles well you're probably looking at just tweaking the carb.

I have absolutely NO idea what that is supposed to mean...... We're all wonderful, thoughtful, caring, concerned, AND enlightened folks hereabouts.

:lie:

Something like that anyway I'm quite sure.

The Earlier series KDX is a good bike.

Have fun with it!!

The 1988 is not a E-series, Is it?

I thought it was an A-model.

I think the E-series started in '89

I knew that when I wrote it. Good thing I worried enough about it to actually check the model designations.

Oh...wait.....

Thanks for the catch, though.
