Hello all. I'm leaving the quad world behind me(sold my 400EX today) and shopping for a bike. Several people have recommended the KDX and even this site, so here I am. From what I've seen here thus far, I'm sure I'll enjoy my stay...

You will find that a lot of folks have an opinion of the KDX, but almost every owner really knows the great secret of the KDX - it's a fantastic bike to own, no matter who you are.

Thanks guys. No real experience on bikes, at all. I've ridden a couple, but honestly have only about 15 minutes of seat time on them. I do have a lot of experience on quads though, having owned a few of them throughout the years.

I am going to be 31 in two days, am 5'8" tall and weigh 220lbs. I'm looking for a bike that will be easy to learn on, handle the tight trails I ride well and is not something I will quickly "outgrow". I think the KDX will fill the bill.

The KDX will suit you perfectly. Its a great bike to learn on, and it can be slowly upgraded as you get more experience. Its an "All skill level" bike in my opinion.

Welcome! Rick has seen all "skill levels" beings as tho he's seen me ride my lowered kdx. "There's plenty of room up here," he would tell me.

Go for the KDX. You won't go wrong!!!!!

Think I found one. It's an '03 and he's asking $1700 OBO. What do you think?

Nice and clean... has a pipe and barkbusters on it too!

He says he refreshed the top end last season. It has an FMF pipe with the stock silencer, new reeds and has been jetted. It also has a TrailTech computer with speedo, odometer, etc.

Seems like a decent deal to me...

Do you have a dirtbiking buddy/mech that can look over the bike with you? That's a good idea if you can swing it. That said based on your 15 minute seat time comment. Not riding much doesn't mean you don't know what to look for wear-wise.

Most likely nothing is wrong with it that can't be fixed...but the O.B.O. offer comes into play if you show the owner the wheel bearings wobble, the steering is notchy, the rear suspension (unitrack knuckle) is sloppy, and the sprocket teeth look like wheat in a stiff wind. Those are all basic maintenance points. Things like a rim .250" out of true get more involved time and money-wise.

The best buyer is an informed buyer. $1700 is a good price for a bike as nice looking as the pics indicate..it would be darn good for a bike that had been serviced regularly. A 'ride it and forget it' approach isn't going to work too well with a dirtbike.
