New KDX Owner from Colorado

Post by Wudscrasher »

Greetings, fellow KDXers! I found this forum on one of the other forums,
and this seems more like home to me. I'm a new KDX220 owner after being
out of the dirtbike scene for a few years. In 2000, I bought a new XR400
for my first bike (quite the handful!) but had to sell it in 2003 for the
money. I cried that day. Now, with a steady job, figured I'd better get
back into riding while I had the chance. I'm 33 yo, so still young enough
to bounce back after injury, but it's getting harder all the time! I picked
up a 2000 KDX220 in January, that had been owned by a 17 yo kid who rarely
rode it, for $1700. They never did any maintenance to it in 2 years, which
is probably why I got it for a song. It looked and felt in good condition,
though, and figured for the price, I can fix it up the way I want (it was
bone-stock). I finally took it out for it's break-in and shakedown last week
at the OHV area on the Pawnee Grasslands here in Colorado. For a 2-stroke, I
was very impressed with the linear power of it! It felt like the XR, only
lighter and more fun! I guess this is the time to list the improvements/upgrades
I did to make it the nasty woods-weapon it's supposed to be, eh? Here goes:

Rentahal bars, Moose barkbusters (I don't use the roost protectors - it's just
another annoying and expensive thing to replace all the time) and skidplate,
MSR Raptor clutch perch/lever, FMF Gnarly Woods pipe w/ the TurbineCore IIQ
silencer, E-Line C/F pipe guard, and Wiseco piston. I also replaced the fork
oil, gear oil and brake fluid, cleaned the cylinder and KIPS completely, and got
the jetting close to spot-on (runs a little rich @ 5000, but will be riding
above that, mostly). There's just a few more items to pick up before a May trip
to the San Rafael Swell in Utah: shark fin, rad guards, and front disk guard.
On tap this weekend is replacing the oil and nitrogen in the rear shock, and
greasing the swingarm and steering head bearings. I'm not sure yet if I'll
look into getting stiffer fork springs, as I've barely ridden it yet.

I'm really looking forward to this summer, and can barely control my excitement!
Aside from Utah, I have a trip planned for the RMD 2006 Idaho Spodefest in
August, and I'm a member of the Northern Colorado Trail Riders (http://www.nctr.net),
who have a ton of sponsored trailrides and trailwork rides around northern Colorado.
We ride mostly in the northern front range from the Rampart Range to Redfeather Lakes
to Albany, WY, as well as North Park (Walden), Steamboat, Taylor Park, and Rabbit
Valley (Grand Junction). If you live in our area, or are coming to visit, let me know,
and I'll send you this years ride schedule.

Thank you, Indawoods, for this forum, and I look forward to contributing to this site! :partyman:

Thanks, guys! NM_KDX200, I will probably be in Taylor Park, near Gunnison this summer. I posted the ride schedule for the club I belong to on "Group Rides" - NCTR 2006 Ride Sched. Can't wait for the snow to melt!
