SLEEVE OR NIKASIL ?

Post by Jarl69 »

Hi everyone, just got myself a 1996 KDX 200H, after a 30 year break from riding... engine was a bit rattly so i took the barrel off to check condition. Seems it has had a sleeve put in it and this is has semi seized and needs a new piston and bore is now 67.5 been told it can go to 68 but piston kits expensive and yhis would be the absolute max it could be bored.
My question is could i have it re sleeved ? Or would it be best to try to find a second hand one with nikasil ?
Any good places to find spares ...
Cheers Jarl

I'd try to find a 2nd hand one myself. If you do find one send it off to Millennium Tech to have it nikasealed, if it needs it.
Stock coating is electroplating

Welcome to kdxrider.

Check on price comparison over the next few pistons and go with what your budget allows.

If it was free, very few would choose sleeving for a KDX.

SLEEVE OR NIKASIL ?

Post by Molly's 70 »

I'd try to find a decent replacement. I'm so stupid, I'd pay the $620 for a brand new one & get a complete top end kit. Of course, That would lead to a complete rebuild of the bottom end, which would lead to a new chain, fresh set of tires, brakes, handlebars, all new plastic, paint, cables.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

No. They have taken a hone to that. Look at how carbon free the piston is. No carbon even on the side of the piston. That ad is a pure scam. Look around on eBay, and you will see a lot of cylinders that are used and just worn or worn out. They won't look like that.

An Electrofusion coated cylinder will not the same as an aftermarket plated cylinder, also. Electrofusion does not have the level of crosshatch that aftermarket and most other company OEM cylinders has.

I have had a couple of new OEM KDX cylinders to look at.

Take a look at some of their other cylinders and heads. All "misrepresented", as they have done something to them. Shop elsewhere.

That one looks like they may have actually honed through the plating. I can see a color change above the ports.

Not trying to be a wiseguy, but what are the tell-tale signs that it has been altered, Jason? Me looking at it, it looks like a good condition cylinder with factory plating. Like it just needs sent out and re-plated.

Well, if you can talk the guy into shipping;

There's a whole motor for a good price.

Good plating will be smooth and polished looking, with no vertical scratches that you can catch with a finger nail. There may be very light cross hatch still visible in the upper and lower areas of the cylinder where the rings don't ride. A re-plate will often have small, pin hole pits in the plating, this is normal and is not an issue.

six riders,

that was a telltale sign to me. The shading caught my eye, then I began to look closer.

Look at the piston. I don't think one could do a break in on the rings and pull it back apart without SOME discoloration on the piston. Also, look at some of the other auctions. They altered other parts.

That guy went to town with some sand paper or emery cloth on the piston and honed the cylinder like I’ve never seen before. If you look at the eBay listing on a desk top, and use the magnification window on the photos, you can see a lot more detail. on top of all that, his price is ridiculous.

I gotcha. Thanks for explaining. I would think it could be sent to somewhere like Millennium or PowerSeal and be saved, right?

Yes, but he is asking $400 for a cylinder that needs a $300 replate
