New KDX owner in Minnesota

Hi everyone,

I just purchased my first ever KDX! Its a 1991 Kdx 200 with an FMF pipe. The kid I bought it from knew very little about it other than it had been sitting for a while and he couldn't get it running correctly so I made a cheap offer and the bike came home with me! The bike runs, but not very well. I rode it around a little bit and makes no power at all and stalls out whenever I come to a stop. I haven't had the chance to tare into it yet, but when I do, I am sure I'll have questions for you all. This would be bike number 7 to my collection of mostly 2 stroke street bikes so I am very familiar with two cycle engines, but this will be the most modern and the only liquid cooled bike I own. I am excited about riding this thing!

Welcome! Two stroke street bikes? You can't say that without giving us more! R5's, RD's, H1's, DT's? I absolutely love old 2T streetcars. I have owned a few RD's over the years and even a YSR.

I have 3 Kawi triples, a stock 1976 Kawasaki KH500, 1975 H1 500 that is currently a bit of a basket case and another 76 KH500 hybrid that is heavily modified with a 1973 H2 750 engine, expansion chambers and modern suspension. I also have a 1972 Yamaha R5 350 that is an old flat track bike and is a total blast to ride! I sold a really nice 74 RD350 to my brother and a Suzuki GT750 a couple years back and am regretting it now so I bought the KDX to kinda numb the pain... its another bike I always wanted. I have a couple 4 strokes too, but they aren't as interesting, one is a stock Kawi CSR 750 twin and the other is a modified Yamaha Virago 750 that I daily along with the kh500. Its nice to find other two stroke street bike fans! Most guys I mention them to have know idea what I'm talking about... hell most guys around here don't even know what a two stroke is LOL.

Wow, you have quite the stable there. I'm officially jealous and impressed!

Almost picked up a complete Suzuki GS550 a few months back but didn't pull the trigger. Already kicking myself over that.

I really miss my old '73 RD350. I built it from the ground up as a kind of hooligan bike. Bigger Mikuni carbs, K&N cone filters, DG heads and pipes, ported cylinders, 1.5" stretched swing arm, RD400 wheels, and lots of chrome. It spanked a lot of unsuspecting 650/750 four cylinder bikes!

I'd love to find a nice RD or Kawi Triple. You'll have to share some pics as soon as you get settled.

As far as your KDX, congrats on it! Sounds like your problems are mostly going to be found in the carb. Be careful not to dip it in any immersion cleaning solution, as that will damage the rubber jet block o-ring gasket. Also the E-Series bikes have a bit of a poor design in the exhaust powervalves. The RH valve is often times shredded. That definitely affects performance.

Nice stable indeed!

I bed to differ on the design flaw comment. The flaw is that people DO NOT maintain power valve equipped cylinders properly. The 2019's will be coming out soon. That means the oldest "E" is 30 years old. One cannot run it with improper jetting and Walmart boat oil for forever.

I did read about the issue with dipping the carburetor and how it causes the o ring to swell and deteriorate. It kind of scares me because the kid who sold me the bike told me he cleaned the carb. I didn't know about the carb dipping thing prior to buying the bike so I didn't think about it. Hopefully the o rings are ok, but in case they are destroyed, is there a replacement available? I'm pulling the carb off this weekend. I hope for the best but suspect the worst.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome. Raced a Yamaha TZR250 back in my much younger days and always dreamed of getting my hands on a Gamma but never did. My track habit these days is scratched by 1st generation water cooled Gixxers, but they just aren't as fun.

Ive always wanted to ride a production racer like a TZR. The closest Ive ever ridden to such a beast was an RZ350 that I was interested in buying a few years back... very impressive bike. But then again, my H2 is pretty much setup similar to an old H1R. There was a Gamma 500 at a motorcycle show here in MN called the Bearded Lady (sadly the show was cancelled a couple years ago). It was an interesting show that consisted of mainly rat bikes and backyard creations that in some cases, really pushed the envelope. Anyway, that Gamma was the only other bike to enter in the 2 stroke class besides myself with my R5. If that Suzuki never showed up I would be the (not so) proud owner of a tattooed pig fetus in a jar of formaldehyde... first place prize. What happened to the TZR?
