New from Fort Worth, TX

Post by kdxstones »

After nearly 15 years without a bike, and no racing, I went and bought my favorite bike a while back. It's a '98 KDX 220, and I probably paid too much for it, but it was time to get back at it. I got a boy turning 5 this year and he is wanting to start riding, so I figured I need to look like I remember how to ride. This bike is pretty rough on the eyes but had great compression, and it's a '98. So far, I rebuilt the forks and power valve arm as well as put on new tires, chain and a few odds and ends. Currently waiting for the OEM plastics to arrive to get it back to looking close to factory. The previous owner welded nuts on the frame and never did maintenance on the forks. When I rebuilt them, the Japanese fish oil than came out looked like turquoise rocks you'd put in a Beta fish tank. The plastics had been repainted, I suppose in an attempt to look like a 250?? Or maybe, they didn't appreciate the purple. Also, for some reason the subframe at the rear fender was cut off. Has anyone seen anything like that, and if so, did you use a flux welder to put a new piece of pipe on?

I've been looking at this forum for about 2 years now, so I am thankful to have now registered as a KDX owner. I'm looking forward to getting back into TCCRA and having the kids follow suit. Below is a picture of the before plastics/graphics as the bike is currently race ready after some tinkering. It's nice that it's still a real spitfire and wants to wheelie in third like I remembered the 96 doing when I was a kid.

Welcome to kdxrider! :bravo:

It looks like someone put some USD forks on it. Keep up the good work.

Kawasaki makes a KLX110 that might work for your child. You might also find a Suzuki made 2003 - 2006 KDX50. (Suzuki JR50) with lime green plastic)

Looking at a PW50 first, then maybe a Cobra or LEM (if they still make them) but we will see! Thank you Jason.

Welcome to the forums, and welcome back to riding. At 5 he'll outgrow the PW50 pretty quickly, but its a good starting point. As for your subframe, most likely the PO flipped the bike and bent the subframe under the rear fender so just cut it off since it's not replaceable like the KX. Other than taking away a good handhold it doesn't hurt anything. Frame is steel so you could just weld on a replacement section if you wanted to.

I’m in FW as well and TCCRA is great, but also look up TORN. I have raced both and each has their pros/cons like everything in life. TORN opener is 3/17. PM me if you want company first time out.

Purple pumpkin eater! May want to consider some bark busters on there before you hit the trail.
