Greetings from Down Under

Post by Knightmayre »

Hey everyone,
I just got myself a 90 model (seller said it was a 91 but VIN and ADR plate stated 1990)...
Been aeons since I had an enduro- my last one seized while I was lane splitting at 80mph on a motorway in the UK (which is where I am from originally). I've either shrunk since then or bikes have being sniffing steriods!
So, my plans are to actually get this thing road legal as in Australia you can have recreational registration which lets you drive off road legally and then you have full registration which lets you drive on a regular highway. So far I've got the headlight working, front and rear brake light switches fitted but not wired up. I'm letting the local bike shop finish the rest which will empty my wallet.
Am thinking of putting a GPS speedo in but that's just a thought :)

Anyways I have a couple of issues- I cannot get it to idle by itself, have to keep blipping the throttle a little, much to the neighbours delight haha and she's smoking nicely too (the bike, not the neighbour lol). Am not too worried about that, am going to do the idle screw adjustment tomorrow and see what happens.
Other issue is that oil is coming out of the breather from the cover with KIPS stamped on it and that worries me a tad.
Hoping someone will point me in the right direction as to why that breather is spitting oil on my driveway.

Cheers for now
Dave

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

Start with the easy things, then move on to the next harder thing.

Is it oil injected? It sounds like you have a fair amount of unburned oil in the cylinder if it is spitting out the power valve cover drain.

By the way, we don't have such covers in the USA.

Jetting, air filter, reed, engine condition, etc. are all something to check on.

No, no oil injection, she's a premix girl (32:1 is that correct?)
I have a spare motor (a 93) and there is no breather on the KIPS cover on that one.
I do have abit of oil leak from around where the exhaust mount is so I'll probably get the local bike shop to look at it- he's good and he's reasonable price-wise.
I've got a compression tester so am thinking of seeing what the comp is tomorrow.
I found the PO has cut and crimped the speedo cable (why?) so I'm now on the hunt for a genuine speedo.

Out of interest, where did Kawasaki hide the engine number?

Should I create a new thread for my issues and the saga of getting it road-legal?

Cheers
Dave

There are two o-rings on the pipe. They wear out over time. There is usually a copper crush gasket there also. If the pipe was bent, it could cause it not to line up properly.

You might want to create a new post in the general Q + A to ask questions or show your work.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes, I was a bit apprehensive that having such an old model bike would make it hard to find a forum with active, knowledgeable members. Good to see I was wrong.

Going to start a new thread, please be patient with me as I tend to waffle on haha

Cheers

Hi MaverickAus,
I'm in the NW suburbs of Melbourne (near the airport), not quite where I'm from though- I'm Scottish and left the UK then spent 10 years in the US and have been here almost 10 years also.
I get around lol
Cheers!

Friends of mine were living at Glenroy just near the airport they have now moved to Seymour. I visited them in Feb 2015 and went to the Superbikes at Phillip Island as well as the Avalon Airshow and did the GOR on my Kawasaki Versys. Had a great time.

Glenroy is just down the rod from us :)
I've never been to any events at Phillip Island althogh the mrs & I have been to the caravan park for a bit (and saw the penguins)...
I did the GOR in my Skyline a few years ago and never saw anything as everyone else was flooring it so I was hanging on for dear life (as was the mrs lol), is a great drive though.
Went down to see the 12 Apostles as well.
Would love to go to the airshow as I've had an aviation background but funds are normally too tight to go :(
Cheers!
