30 YEARS LATER, RIDING DIRT BIKES AGAIN

After riding dirt bikes until age 18, I had not ridden until last year.
I wanted to get a bike with a good reputation and was inexpensive and light.
The reviews for the KDX were impressive, so I bought a KDX220r.
I did not read reviews on the 220.
First impression was something was wrong due to the top end power was so weak.
I then went on KDXRIDER and found out that the 200 and the 220 are totally different power bands.
Purchased an exhaust and reeds, tuned the carb according to Fredette Racing specs and the bike now runs like I hoped it would.
Today I added heavy clutch plates and a flywheel weight.
I joined the forum to get more tips.
I ride mostly single tracks in the cascade mountains in Washington state.

Welcome to the forum! You sound like me, took 30+ years off and back on a 220! I got the RB mods done(head and carb) , it came with a pro circuit pipe so I'm good to go. How heavy on the fly wheel weight did you go? I'm finding I get a little to much wheel spin and have been thinking of getting one.

Welcome indeed! As soon as I read the beginning of the post that you were greeting back into the sport after a long hiatus like that, I thought the KDX would be perfect!
Have you seen info on problems with the stock 220 piston needing replaced? I have a 200, so not speaking from experience, butt I've read about it enough that I want to make sure you find out about it the RIGHT way.

Good choice of bikes. I quit for 35 years but got re-addicted a couple of years ago!
+1 on the piston swap. KNOW what is in there.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on getting back into it. Lots of great riding here in the Cascades of Washington. Couple of good Facebook groups to join for keeping abreast of the riding, and without doubt one of the most active and vocal off road riding communities in the country.

I was in your same place 4 years ago and thought that a wr450 would be the way to go after a 30 year hiatus . while I had fun on the WR it beat me up on single tracks here in Michigan. I would be absolutely exhausted riding it. a few months ago I decided to switch it up and bought a KDX200 :supz: . The difference for me was night and day , I now can ride with ease , ride twice as much without being exhausted, and I am having a blast "tweaking" the bike to my ability. You have a great reliable bike with a reputation that is justified. enjoy the trails and welcome back.
