Honda guy getting a taste of green.

Post by TeamExileRacing »

Hey y'all, finally decided to pull the trigger on something besides a Honda. Been wanting a 2 stroke for awhile and kept hearing great things about the kdx. Well this week or next I'm going to pick up a 95 kdx with a blown engine. It has a few aftermarket parts and built suspension but top end needs rebuilt and I may just put a new crank in it while I'm in there. I'm also missing the muffler and headlight.

I'm sure I'll be on here a bunch looking for advise and recommendations.

For starters what do y'all recommend for a crank and top end? I'm hoping to keep the engine close to stock compression and stroke.

Thanks,
Luke

I will vote for OEM crank / connecting rod
Millenium or Langcourt for repair and relate
Wiseco piston kit

I was looking on eBay and couldn't find any aftermarket cranks but connecting rods. I guess I'll have to send it off to put the new rod in. I was planning to use a wiseco piston but and replate the cylinder. I have to get the thing first and see how bad it is. If it's not bad I may just rebuild the top end and ride her till she gives out. This bike wont see much use I have multiple bikes and this will serve as a bike for friends and family when they are visiting.

There are no aftermarket KDX crankshafts. Hopefully, the crankshaft halves are OK. If so, rebuild the stock crank. If not, buy a used crankshaft off eBay and have it rebuilt.

Good luck on the bike.

Thanks guys. Who all rebuilds cranks? I probably couldn't get that done at a local Powersports shop?

Congrats on the KDX!

If you send the cylinder off to Millennium for replating, they can do your crank too. They just rebuilt and balanced one for me

I have a cobra muffler/silencer for sale if you want something. The spark arrestor is a steel mesh over the outlet, but it's yours for $20+s&h if it's helpful.
Also have a 92 crank that millenium rebuilt under 30 hrs ago, but my piston went and I didn't want to risk debris in the brand new bearings. You're welcome to it for parts if it's helpful. Beware, millenium welds cranks.

Lol no worries for me. If it ever needs anything again, it will be going back to them anyways. I did notice the tack welds when I got it, didn't think much of it tho.

Honda guy getting a taste of green.

Well, picked me up a 95 kdx today. It's in a lot better shape than I expected. It's been sitting in a barn for 7 years but really isn't that bad. Missing a few odds and ends but all it needs is new rings and a lot of love.

Not yet, just going off what he said. I'll break into the engine a little over the next few months. I got this for something to tinker with when I got the free time. We having our first child in may and this will be my escape if I have the time.

I already planned to do a complete so financially and mentally I'm already prepared for that. If I don't have to that's a bonus.

Informed decision making, is all. I sent my crank and head to RB after Millennium rebuilt my engine.
Ron wouldn't touch the crank because it was welded, and head ended up being no good. Not anyone's fault, but had I known I could have saved some time and money.
