Flywheel interchange question

Post by rubbersalt »

Hello all. I'm in search of some information, and I beleive you guys may be able to help me out.

I'm in search of a flywheel, not just any flywheel, but one that'll fit the 84-89 Tecate. Unfortunately, these are no longer available. After some extensive research, it turns out that the 86 KDX200 Flywheel bolts up and clears the stator. It isn't timed right, but thats OK, I can figure that out no problem. From what I've researched, the 82-88 KDX200 use the same lightning coil as the Tecate, atleast the one sold by Ricky stator is the same part number. Next is where I'd like to see if anyone can provide information.

Will the later year KDX flywheel bolt up to the 80s models? If so, does it clear the Stator? I'm obligated to use the original stator, I need it for research.

From what I've researched, all kinds of flywheels fit each others cranks in the 80s. kx125s fit 250s, which fit kdx, etc. What about the 90s?

Why not just buy a Tecate flywheel on eBay?

Looks like part number 21007-1124 fits the '84s and '85s only. (Did they even make the Tecate as late as '89?) Partzilla shows it's still available from Kawasaki, but goes for $388.59. I'd check with some big motorcycle salvage yards to see if they have any.

Flywheel interchange question

I haven't been able to locate a tecate fly wheel on ebay. Ricky stator did make them, but i cant find those either.

I did find something very interesting for you KDX guys. I think i found a flywheel that may work with a direct bolt on, no guess work... But i may be wrong, you may need to make it fit like the Tecate.

These are avaliable, and are from team red.

1989 TRX 250r flywheel. It bolts up. It's got 4 magnets. I've taken some pictures, but don't see a way to upload them.

I don't see any on there now. If you run an eBay search, and then click on the 'Follow this search' link, it will e-mail you the next time someone posts one for sale.

Flywheel interchange question

I'll have to do that. In the mean time, do you guys know what flywheels bolt up to the old school KDx? If i can find a flywheel that at least bolts to the crank, that'l give me a starting point.

I know the inside diameter of the magnets needs to be more than 84mm. If i find a flywheel that is close, but is a tad smaller... Thats why we invented the lathe :-D

I've sent them an email, but got no response. Maybe a phone call is in order.

If they can create a Tecate Flywheel, why cant that rotate that center part and create an early KDX one too?

I looked on the Ricky Stator site, and I did not see it. They used to have it. Recently, I saw a stator / flywheel combo on ebay. I want to say it was offroad innovation, but it looks like their website got taken by some spammer place. I can not see any on eBay. I don't know why it all dried up! Weird.

Ricky stator no longer carries them. I spoke to Gregg at offroad innovations, he has few oem ones in great shape. I'll leave those for some ones restoration one day. To pricy.

On a side note, the trx250r has to much offset to work in the KDX or tecate :( With modification, it may work. until then, back to the drawing board.

I received a flywheel that has some potential with modification though:)

The following machines have the same flywheel taper on the crank. As in, the flywheels will bolt to the crank, but may not even be remotely possible to use. Looking at the number of magnets and the offset for the center hub of the flywheel will be key. The big end opens to 20.15mm and has a 5.5 degree per side taper. (11 total). Flywheel interchange question

Post by rubbersalt »

I wondering, does anyone know the color code for the stator on the KDX 200s from the 80s? I've got a feeling that my Tecate CDI will work with them.

Anyone want to check the wires and test out a CDI?

This may already be covered but any kdx 200 flywheel will bolt up to the c series shaft. I have a flywheel from an h-series on my 1986
