Hi. I just picked up a 1990 kdx 200 for $500 yesterday. It's been sitting for a few years but it's complete and hasn't been butchered like so many bikes of it's age. I put gas in it and it fired right up but it's a little tame for my tastes so I ordered a pipe for it off ebay. What kinda of stuff should I be looking for? I found a few loose spokes on the rear wheel I ordered a new tire and a few spokes. I drained the coolant and changed the oil over to type F like I run in all my Suzuki's. Clutch feels great and it shifts good. I think I did okay for $500?

This is what I have ordered so far:
carbon reeds
fmf pipe and silencer
bought a few jets to start tuning with
no toil airfilter
new grips
and a new headlight bulb

Nice clean E2! If you say the bike is too tame, part of the reason might be that the powervalves are roasted(they are infamous for stripping off the gears). They are made of some low strength aluminum from the factory. Check the E series section in the board index for thread on steel valves available from a small company in the U.K

Check the power valve system and reeds to see if they are mechanically sound.

Can I check the power valve without taking the head off? I already ordered boyesen carbon reeds for it. It runs really good It's just my last dirtbike was an 01 yz 250 and it was a bit more peppy than this so I figured I'd throw a pipe and reeds at it and see what I gain. I have an 86 lt250r that I have ported and piped and it rips pretty good I'd say the kdx is on par with the lt power wise. I really like the bike a lot I just want to make sure I get it right.

Yea you can check the power valves by taking the pipe off and looking down the exhaust. There are 2 on either side and one in the middle. Use the lever on the rigth side to toggle open and closed. tip: If ever disassembling that lever, the nut holding the lever to the shaft is reverse thread

Well the power valves are moving freely. It runs pretty dang good I guess I'm just used to a little more power. I can get the front end up through third and I weigh 175lbs. I can't wait to see what the fmf pipe and the carbon reeds do for it!
