Good ol' 1993 KDX200

Post by FilipinoAviator »

Hello All!

I've been on the streets for the past few years, owning half a dozen street bikes or so. The other day my brother expressed interest in getting rid of the old beater KDX. I remember bombing around on it many years ago when my feet couldn't touch the ground and I could barely kick start it on my own.

Anyways, fast forward to a few weeks ago when I acquired the bike from my brother. Just brings a smile seeing an old friend. That smile soon faded and I went to ripping the bike apart that had not been cleaned in every bit of 10 or 15 years.

Kicking it over seemed to have okay compression, but not great. So I pulled the motor out and have been cleaning and disassembling as I go. The whole KIPS system is trash. Gears are shredded, shafts are broken, and now I see why my brother kept saying 'it just doesn't have the power I think it should.' It was also in need of a top end overhaul for far too long.

I hope to learn a lot from you guys! I'm a forum junky who frequents WristTwisters and CBRXX. Hopefully I can find the KIPS stuff for relatively cheap and have this bike going back together sooner than later.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the link to some steel KIPS valves! I like this place already!!

Here is what I'm starting off with... Not much but here she is-

Here are a few of the chunks that used to be a power valve-

And having a shop full of goodies always helps! After letting the jug soak overnight in carb cleaner, I rinsed it off, dried it, then lined the barrel with masking tape, ripped off a piece of cardboard that used to hold a 12-pack, rolled the cardboard into the barrel to hold the tape in place, and sandblasted the whole thing. Looks much better than she did!

I'll get a build thread going here soon. I usually wait until it's done and make a long thread/post. Stay tuned
