New KDX220 - Diamond in the rough

Post by Knapman »

Hey guys,

I checked my local classfieds last night and saw a 2001 KDX220 for $2800...looked to be in great shape. 12 hours later and its in my garage!

I used to ride an xr 70 and xr 100 as a kid, and then had a 2009 zx6r for 3 years. This is my first real dirt bike! Had it out for a quick rip even though I was freezing, HOLY bottom end! Love it!

The bike has approx 25h on it since new and the following mods:

FMF Growler
FMF Exhaust
EBC Pads
Aftermarket chain and smaller front sprocket.
Bored Carb
Jet Kit

Take a look at the condition it's in for an almost 15 year old trail bike. I took it for a quick rip so it's a bit dirty...(relatively...)

Nice bike! Now before you ruin it, make sure that the stock piston has been replaced, due to premature skirt failure on the 220 piston.

Very Nice! As a 220 owner myself I agree to change that piston. I got my 05 with only about 12 hours on it and when I changed the piston at 14 hours this is what I found.

A Hole in one skirt. The start of a crack.

Not worth the risk. $150 bucks and your done.

Beautiful 220! Congrats

Thanks guys.

Also forgot to mention that it had a Wiesco Piston and Rings put in it within the first few hours the original owner had it, so I should be good for a bit!

Similarly, I just recently picked up a well maintained 2004 KDX220 with FMF Gnarly pipe and a number of other upgrades. Really a sweet bike! Like you I had dirt bikes as a kid (Hodaka Super Rat and then a Suzuki RM125) but it's been 35 years! After purchasing the bike a couple of weeks ago, I took it to the local Kawasaki Dealer for a thorough service, including all fluids, etc. They were very complimentary of the bike's condition. Had a great time today riding it in some serious mud in southern TN. This all started when my good friend gave his 10 year old a dirt bike for Christmas. He and I are now reliving our youth. The 220 has amazing low end power is very responsive. I'm thrilled to have my first (and last) Kawasaki. After this one it's off to the retirement home...

Not sure how to post a picture, but if I figure that out I'll send you a couple in another post.

That's showroom nice! Hard to believe someone bought it and only put 25hrs in 15yrs! Not sure what to call that type of find, but I'm glad you found it. Quick, go play the lottery!
