New kdx owner

Post by Lakegertrude »

Just acquired a 99 kdx220, pretty decent shape
Not running the best, apparently sitting for
a good while. Starts right up, has 137 psi compression
But very boggy in mid range and smoky a lot of
Oil coming out of exhaust. Really don't much about
What was done to the bike in the past as far as repairs
or upgrades, it does have fmf gnarly pipe and
silencer other than that looks pretty stock.Pulled
Carb and cleaned thoroughly , changed gear case oil
And new air filter

Find and follow the jetting guide! Also, what oil and mix ratio are you using? Do you know if it has the stock piston? There is an issue with the stock cast piston that causes the skirt to break off and destroy the whole motor...better check that out also.
Here read this thread, good info here http://www.kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopi ... 77&t=12457

Oh, WELCOME and enjoy that bike and this site! :partyman:

Thanks, I did get the cyclepedia service manual
I am thinking about sending the carb to RB
Seems like everyone says good things about
That mod, may go ahead and open up the top end
while that is being done, I have to say I am a little
intimidated with the kips system . I have not had a
Dirt bike since a 1978 yamaha it175 that I bought
New. So I am very old school used to working on
old air cooled stuff. My son and also got a 2002
Wr250f that had been storage ever since it was new
So that is what got this all started, wife thinks I
am nuts, but this is FUN stuff! Anyway I may be
Picking your alls brains regularly Thanks!

You don't need to entirely remove the KiPS to take the top end off. Just undo the LEFT handed nut on the KiPS actuator shaft, remove anything attached to the cylinder and unbolt the bottom of the cylinder. Lift the cylinder off (leave the head on).
I just bought my son an 01 220. Nothing wrong with his stock piston, but I've seen the damage caused when they do break (and it's BIG pieces)....so I replaced it with a Weisco. Cheap insurance IMO.
The 99 is in the prime year range for the broken skirt!

Thanks for the advice, I will try to tackle that
shortly. It is so cold now , it will be a good
indoor project . Hope to have this one running
as good as the WR when the weather breaks,
Would like to try Hatfield McCoy in Spring
