Hi guys. So I have no experience at all on a dirt bike, all I know is it looks fun and I'm tired of missing out on all the fun.
Anyway, I've been doing some research, and decided on the KDX200 as one of the best options for myself. I hope to be getting one sometime, so I thought I'd join this forum and get into the swing of things before I actually actually pull the trigger on a bike. I'll probably have a few questions about it, also.

I recently found a 1990 KDX200 on craigslist for $400, the owner says it needs a new "cylinder" to run. I don't even know what that is... haha
Anyway, does this sound like a good deal to you guys? The bike looks very clean and not worn out at all.
Thanks for the help! Hopefully I'll be able to get to the point sometime where I'll be able to contribute. This seems to be a great community.

An E series (1989-1994) KDX is worth (depending on the area) $900-1400. If the Cylinder is destroyed (not rebuildable) you are looking at around $500 to replace it Along with the cylinder the piston will need to be replaced. If the cylinder is rebuildable, you are looking at $500 for the whole top end.
All that and you are looking at being $900+ into a bike just to make it ridable, who knows what other problems it might have.....Not that a running KDX won't cost you time and money after buying it.

Can you post some pictures of the bike, or a link to the add?

If you get a damage assessment and end up needing a new cylinder(You are more likely to just need a replate), I have one I can sell your for cheap. Only downside is there is a weld on the left side to seal up a crack.

I am using the cylinder right now, as a matter of fact and I put a season on it last year with no issues. I have a spare ready to go in with fresh plating on it so I will have no use for it after I swap that one in.

Nice enough looking 90! $400 is about right for a parts bike even without a motor in that condition...

My question would be what the damage is, and if there is any damage done to the bottom end. Perhaps it suffered a catastrophic failure and threw the piston or rod. In which case the whole motor may be done in.

In any case if you end up buying, I have the cylinder you need. $70 shipped

Wow, that i a nice looking bike for a 90! I'd buy that for $400 any day. My guess is that it needs a piston, not the cylinder....but that is just a guess.

Thanks for the info guys. I've done some research, and I don't think I'll jump on this one. It's an older bike, and it could have more problems than the guy posted and I wouldn't know.

Which bike out of the two I posted links to has an easier fix? I a head gasket easier to repair than a cylinder?
I'm not afraid with getting my hands dirty and learning a few new things, I just want to know which would be the better buy.

taped seat shows horrible mechanic negligance

stock it has a rear disk brake

some dum-dum has put a rear drum on it

I was thinking that as well. Right now I'm just looking at everything that has "KDX200" in the title.
When it actually comes time to grab a bike, I'll look for a good one. I know it's highly improbable that I can actually get a good bike that looks like that/costs that little.

Thanks for the link and the warning. This forum has really helped steer me in the right direction!
