New KDX owner
Just bought a 05 220, rode it for 5 minutes and the engine died. Piston locked. Upon tearing it apart, I realized the stock piston lost the skirt. Well @$%#! Now, I need another engine and need to find the rebuild manual for the engine. Any help would be appreciated for a whipped NewBie.

Re: New KDX owner
If you haven't looked around the thread much, it is VERY common for the OEM 220 pistons to explode.
Is the bottom end ok? Could you replate/sleeve, new piston, and away you go?

Re: New KDX owner
I believe that the piston pieces are down in the case. I pulled them out of the intake, on top of the piston, and the top of the bottom case. I don't know if I can get them all out without spitting the case. It's hard to turn over. I think I will buy a used engine, install forged piston, and use the old bottom end and trans for spare parts. I want to ride it.

Re: New KDX owner
engine for these bikes are hard to find
im sure this isn't what you want to hear but your best bet is splitting the cases and seeing what the damage is
(look at it this way, if you were to use the engine for spare parts it would need to come apart to get the spares out anyway)

Re: New KDX owner
Thanks for the heads up. I bought a used engine an hour ago. Now I can swap the piston with a top end OH and get back to riding. I will have time to split the case next month and plan to rebuild it all the way. I will then have a great off the shelf spare I could swap at any time. I'm so looking forward to learning about 2 strokes from this site!! Any help or guidance is always welcomed.

Re: New KDX owner
Wow good job finding a spare engine so quickly!
Sounds like a good plan, you can have a good bottom end that you are sure has good bearings, crank seals etc... in it.
So what are your plans for the old head? Going to get it replated/sleeved as a spare as well? Or is the new engines cylinder well within spec?

Re: New KDX owner
Thanks Josh! I plan to send the old head to RB along with the carb for a mod. I'm not sure if the old current cylinder is usable. Some damage at the lower ports from the piston skirt break. I might send it off just to see if it could be replated/repaired. It's good to know that I will have a backup if needed.

Re: New KDX owner
A little more info on the bike I bought. Apparently, the PO was a winner in Dirt Track Readers Rule contest where the magazine mods the bike for you and does a spread. September 2010 p77 tells the story of the bike. I bought it from the guy in the magazine after finding it on Craigslist.
