New Dude

Post by woodsgoblin »

Howdy all,
I'm from eastern North Carolina and I'm hunting for a modern-ish woods bike.
I am leaning very heavily towards a KDX... going to lay hands/eyes on a 2001 220R later this week... might bring it home.
I've spent a good deal of time in the woods on motorcycles, from a Kawasaki KE100 back in the 70's to a XR400 here recently.
Built and raced a '71 Triumph T25 for a few years and I am currently building a Greeves-framed/BSA 441-engined machine to run vintage XC on (or under, as is sometimes the case) next season.
Looks like this is the go-to spot for KDX info, so I hope to be poking around here quite a lot.

Sounds like a plan
just keep in mind that the stock 220 piston likes to explode and needs to be replaced before riding
Another thing to keep in mind is that the kdx did not change from 96 to the end of the run so condition is much more important than year

Just lugged home a 2001 220.
A little tattered but it runs well.

Welcome to the forums. Check out Schekaet's Newb Thread. Lots of good info there. The stock piston should go, other than that ride.

Thanks, bufftester, I've been readng and re-reading the "Newb Thread" and trying to absorb the info... this is my first foray into 2 strokes in 30+ years (kwaka ke100? about 1978, or so) so I have a pretty steep learning curve to climb...

Surprise! It's a KDX!
A little tattered, but hopefully a solid foundation.
I have a manual CD on the way.
I am hankering to get started.

I have an '01 220r which really drove me from 4t...I sold my CRF250x 2 years ago because the KDX was such a game-changer for me. Since that time I picked up a KTM 250xcw, which is what the KDX probably would've looked like had Kawasaki continued to develop the bike. That said, the KDX is still in my garage and is still on my "will not sell" list. I use it as a back up and a buddy bike when my brother or a friend wants to ride in the woods...or when I encounter the guy that says to me "you trail ride? cool. never been..." Awesome bike. ENJOY! :supz:
