1990 KDX 200 - Transmission Oil Amount

To All,
I am using a friends bike this weekend and want to change the oil for him but I do not know the amount to put in. I have googled this topic and have come up with various answers. Would you lend me a hand and give me a definitve answer. I sure like this bike. I can see why you all are big fans.

I can't even remember. But there is a sight glass.
Also, check with your friend before you just do it. He may prefer a certain oil or something.

Using Honda 80/85 trans oil in our 3 KDX's--- the whole quart. No issues. Some use synthetic type F automobile trans fluid, some use Bel-Ray Gear Saver, and others follow the owners manual and use 10W-40 motor oil for motorcycles. Do not use just any oil you find on the shelf without being sure it contains ZERO friction modifiers. You will soon be buying new clutches if you do. Many use the whole quart of their oil of choice, even tho the manual has you putting in less than that.

0.75L in my E series manual. In addition to what fitterman said, make sure it is a motorcycle specific oil...especially not automobile oil. If it has the 'energy conserving' label on the back, absolutely do not use it. I made that mistake once with my old xs400!...Needs to be wet clutch compatible without the detergents and friction modifiers. I use Castrol Grand Prix 4 stroke motorcycle oil in my kdx.

Avoid if you see this label!

I have been running nothing but 10W-40, a full quart, from day one in my bike with no issues. My dad has done the same on his 94 KDX since day one and never an issue. Regardless of what oil you use, and whether you put in .75l or 1 qt, the best thing is just regular oil changes, it's cheap, easy, and your bike will love you for it.
