Hello all,
I'm from the Toronto area up in the great white north.
Bought an old 87 KDX200 air cool beast off my brother-in-law who found it on kijiji for quite a steal.
Didn't know what I was getting into, other than a 25 year old bike that fires first kick and has a few broken spokes.
Well, I've only ridden the thing 3 times on the trails (aside form up and down the driveway).
Before I even rode it, I went to replace the broken spokes, and realized the rear rim was corroded through. Also realized that when I greased the rear suspension linkages, my rebound damping went away....
So, new / used shock and rear wheel went on it. Sweet.
Also rebuilt the petcock so it would stop dripping gas on a hot engine.
First time out, fork seals completely gave up on me.
Rebuilt fork, with new bushings, etc.
Second time out, bike ran well, but was starting to rattle at the end.
Took off the jug, piston was pretty beat up, but nothing looked like it was going to gernade, so it went back together.
Third time out, bike ran like crap. Down on power, something seriously wrong. Loading it into the trailer, I realized it was leaking oil out the countershaft.
As it stands, the motor is torn apart on my bench, and I have a rebuild thread going down in the air-cooled section.
So, even though it's been a bit of a nightmare, it's been my stress relief lately, as my wife of 4 months has been quite sick for the past 8 months.
Thanks for all the info so far, and I hope I can help, and not just be helped!
Cheers,
Mark

Sorry to hear of your life troubles.
Keep at it and get to the bike when you can.

Best wishes for the wife.
The bike will be a good distraction, but should come second.
Good luck with the rebuild!
