Just bought my son a 89 KDX 200. Any tips would be appreciated.

This is a good place to start. http://kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=12457 . This is a general place to start (that kinda favors the H series) but the E series tend to have KIPS valve issues that may be worth your time to inspect if you think the bike is lacking on power. If you do a search for "sub valves" you will find a lot of post referring to it.

Welcome!

BIG difference. But still not bad, depending on what you paid. Take a look here http://kdxrider.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=119

Aside from the VIN, 85 would be air cooled, 89 liquid cooled.

yeah i can't complain really i guess. I got it for $450. i fixed the back brake and it's actually running well so i'm not too upset over the deal.
