new michigan kdx rider
Just picked up a 99 KDX 200. I have ridden a couple of odd times throughout the years but have not owned a dirt bike in 15. I was never a great rider but I feel very comfortable and confident on the KDX.
I am very thankful to have a great resource like kdxrider.net so I can learn more about this awesome bike. I am such a noob my first search is going to be "how to mix gas".

I personally run synthetic oil @ 40:1. I chose that mix because it's safe, and because at 40:1 one quart mixes 10 gallons. That just makes it easy. You can safely run a little more or a little less, but remember, that affects your jetting. You need to jet the bike for whatever mix you decide to run.

40:1 also. I run that mainly because most of the people I ride with run that with Amsoil synthetic so it's easier to be able to run what ever any one else has if you run out.
The Cha Cha Cha works pretty good, But I have found that if you do it standing on you left foot facing south east while doing it you get much better mixing results.
+1 on jetting to the mix and not mixing to the jetting.

I was thinking 40:1 but when I asked the seller what ratio he runs he said "50/50" When I asked again he said he mixes 2.7oz in his can. So I know he had a system for doing it. I also asked what brand, he was using Yamalube R and commented that the plug burns golden brown ever since he has been using it. I'll pull the plug tomorrow and see where I stand.

I am running Maxima Castor 927 at 32:1. I figure it gets hotter than hell down here, plus it is what Kawasaki recommended originally, so my bikes can use the extra protection.

Just for what it's worth, I would go with what YOU feel comfortable with and not just what everyone else is doing as far as what ratio to run. Every one has their own opinion as to what works best and what should be done. Jetting, type of oil, and riding conditions play a big role in what you need. A heavy oil mix like 32:1 can run as clean as 50:1 if set up properly.
IMHO synthetic oil has a few perks as far as burning cleaner overall.

By "riding conditions," are you including altitude in that? Doesn't that have a little bit to do with it when you are including the jetting?rbates9 wrote: ... Yep. Higher altitude means smaller jets than sea level jetting.KDX Butterfly wrote:By "riding conditions," are you including altitude in that? So I pulled the plug today and it was oily as if running to rich. I also figured out the previous owners "50/50" mix was 50:1; a little to lean for my blood. I put in a new plug and will run 40:1 through it before I start making adjustments.
On a good note I went to pick up the oil and started to look at boots. I walked out with a pair of alpinestars Tech 8's for $250.
