07 KX125 Basket Case Rebuild

Post by Joshmcmillan »

Hey guys!

Thought I'd share my plans for my most recent project bike (I'll put pics up another time).

I got a 2007 KX125 with the motor completely disassembled for $900 Australian Dollars!! It came with 2 aluminium bike lifts, a fork chock and some armor as well!
(Australia had the KX125 till 2008, they only went to 05 in the USA)

The reason it had been disassembled was because the chain had snapped and ripped the case guard out of the casing leaving a nice big hole in the side of the motor. Previous owner purchased new top end rebuild kit and a set of brand new cases from Kawasaki ($700-800 in Australia).

Bike looks really tidy, new rear sprocket, FMF pipe, tyres are ok, wheels and plastics look brand new, very tidy bike!

Today I purchased the following bits:
-Full gasket kit (I only needed bottom end ones but this was cheaper than buying individually) - $50
-Full seal kit - $42
-RK Heavy Duty Chain - $50
-JT Front Sprocket - $18
-Monster Energy Sticker kit $65

Still need to buy crank bearings but I'm going to do that locally.

After the rebuild I plan on selling it for approximately $3000.

COOL!

How hard are used parts to find for it?

Doesn't seem to be a lot of used parts around, but it seems very easy to find brand new parts fairly cheap.

I think I have most of what I need now, crankshaft bearings turned out to be good. I've given the old crankcase to a mechanic friend to press the small case bearings that I couldn't remove out to put into the new crankcases.

One other thing I think I may be missing is I only remember seeing 3 clutch springs in the pile of parts so I might need to buy a couple of more (approx $10 each). Next week I'll go through and organize everything. I'm a person very into the whole labeling, cleaning and organizing upon dis-assembly, shame the people I buy basketcases from aren't this way ;)

Ok so here's a picture of it when I picked it up:

Pressed the crankshaft in and assembled the gearbox:

It's missing one of two of these tiny bits of the shifting mechanism, so I'll have to order one:

So all the parts I initially ordered finally came and I got to work!

ALMOST FINISHED:

Just dry assembled at the moment and missing clutch side parts. I had to do a second parts order from the US to get a few parts that were missing in the basket when I bought it:
-Crankshaft gear woodruff key and o-ring
-Clutch Push Rod and ball bearing
-Gear mechanism pawl
-Air Filter

I also did have to order a new set of clutch springs as it was missing 2.

WOW! Thank you so much for posting the pics. I sure do wish Kawasaki had sold the KX125 in the USA after 2005.

You have done a very good job on the rebuild. (besides the pipe)

Do you have many people selling parted out bikes in your area? It seems like eBay UK and AUS don't have many used parts. :hmm:

They were unchanged from 05-08, the parts I get from the US are for an 05.

Thanks, haha fmf pipe is polished ready to go.

No not many at all. All the parts I needed I ordered brand new. Same with my KDX.

There were several changes from 05 to 06, then a few from 06 to 07 and I think 08 was the same as 07.

I put a new pipe and silencer on my 2005 KX125 before the last race. I broke 3 ribs on the KX250 before I even raced (or cranked) the KX125.

Oh really? Do you have any more information on what these changes were?
That's a bit worrying as all the parts I have ordered have been for a 2005, everything has seemingly fit well so far hahahaha.

OUCH! This KX was a race bike before it sat for years then I purchased it. It during a social race day at the local track that the chain snapped and done the damage.

I think about all the changes were interchangeable....cosmetic, several bolt/washer part number changes

The clutch lever with the on the fly adjuster is 2006+ (as are the brown shock body and triple clamps)

2007 on the brown hubs

2006+ front wheels use different spacers than 2004 - 2005. It is the current version.

stator on 2007/8 is different

Interesting! You sound to really know your KX's haha :P

I just put the VIN number through the kawasaki vin decoder to check that it is actually a 2007 (I hadn't checked until now).

It sure does! Does America not? How do you identify your bike if it has been stolen?

All bikes in Australia (unless it's been 'removed' or painted over) have the VIN stamped on the front of the frame. My KDX has an additional 'compliance plate' stating the VIN, as it can be ridden on the road (and is).

USA has VIN's, no compliance plate on KDX's, as they are't sold as road-legal, though a few states allow registration.

I know Japan uses a frame number and some parts of UK or Europe.

Mine has a "CYC" title...means it's a Motorcycle instead of an ORV

The E-series KDX's were sold with AND without compliance plates (my old one didn't have one).

The H-series all had a compliance plate meaning you can plate them. But never came with indicators, horn, number plate light etc. that you need (mine had it on it when I got it).

A 200 is less than half the price to register here than a 250, as they fit into the 'scooter' category based on their capacity. :) Mine is due in a few days and it's about $220 including insurance, I know 300's are about $600 odd per year.

So the final parts for the KX arrived, I slapped it all together, filled with fluids and started it up. Did a few heat cycles and it was ready for a quick ride around at low throttle, loading the motor up. I am in a very rural area so I was putting around out the front of our house loading it up through the gears, nek minute, full throttle in 3rd gear, before I could think quick enough to pull the clutch in I was going up a mound flat out up a mound... did a big wheelie and got some air before the bike swing sideways, landed on my knee and threw me in the opposite direction before hitting a fence...... which is lucky considering I wasn't planning on going any sort of speed, so didn't even have a helmet on (silly move I know)..

So, now I'm banged up, knee is black with bruising and I'm struggling to walk.... and the KX needs a bit more work to it!! New throttle cable (presumably, maybe slide or tube etc...) and a new brake lever.
