94 kx 500

Post by Kxcheck »

Just bought a clean 94 kx 500 just a couple of questions
First is it normal for the clutch to be hard to pull in I had a 97 cr250r and it was way easier to pull in
And second is it normal for the bike to vibrate it's not real bad but after a day of riding my hands hurt from in vibrating lol

Thanks guys for any info

Haha yep those are typical big bore two stroke problems. You might check that the clutch cable and pivot points are all in proper working order but it's probably going to have a fairly hard pull. You could get a nice clutch perch and lever with needle bearings like from MSR or there might even be a hydraulic clutch available for that bike. There are some flex bars out there that I think that pivot on either side and are connected at the top with a dampner which are supposed to help with vibrations. On my ATK I took out the old broken down rubber bar bushing then got some poly sway bar bushings and cut them to the same shape with a disc sander then put them back together but without the big bottom washers. I can ride it all day now without it being too uncomfortable, before my hands would start going numb after an hour or so.

Fine bike.
The clutch pull would likely be improved with a new cable and cleaning of the perch. Someone may have put in heavier springs.
I imagine a 500 cc 2-stroke is going to vibrate a bit....

I have one and yes the pull can be stiff and yes they vibrate. There are some cheap fixes for the clutch pull. Moose makes a lever with 2 cable positions and a needle bearing pivot point. It worked well on my KX500 hybrid. Also the clutch cable is routed behind the radiator, you can straighten the metal tube (lower part of the clutch cable) so it routes it in front of the radiator. This relieves the bend at the bottom of the cable and gets rid of the sharp bend at the top of the radiator. These 2 mods noticeably helped the pull on my 500. As far as the vibration goes, theres not much you can do that is cheap or easy. Keep an eye on the motor mounts, pipe mounts (especially the pipe mount under the tank, they like to break). More involved ways to help quell vibration would be to have your crank balanced, I hear this works well for the big KX500. Another way is to run Flexx bars. I run them on mine with excellent results.

The moose lever is actually a complete perch and lever.

I would think COUNTERbalancing a crank on an engine/crank that wasn't designed that way would be quite an undertaking. I wouldn't spend a dime on anyone saying they are going to 'balance' it. Image

There are a few bar dampening devices out there,I think one is called a bar snake? Or try rubber mounts or flexx bars.
