96 ktm 300 lost spark

my 96 300 exc lost spark today. rolled it out of the shop, kicked it 3 times, knew something was wrong because it always starts first kick............anyhow, checked it.....no spark. i cant remember how to check the stator, coil, ect. ......im not getting anything {ohms} from red to black off the stator?


has anyone ran the pvl setup? im thinking about going with this setup ($500)
1) is the flywheel the same weight as my stock one?
2) any problems from this kit before i pay $500?

Weird, you're getting infinite OHMs or continuity?
I know nothing of the pvl setup.

i can set the meter to k ohms.........and nothing. it wil read some ohms.? i dont know if the flywheel, stator, or coil is bad?? the coil seems to ohm out tho..........the reason i was gonna go with the pvl setup is it comes with everthing. then i wont have to guess.

You will lose the electronic ignition mapping of the CDI if you switch over to a mag. Timing is different when PV is open/closed etc. Most magneto setups I've seen were installed in an application where PV closed didn't matter, or PV was disabled....also when higher than stock max RPM needs to be achieved. Micro-sprint, kart, etc.

It will work...It's made more to be an upgrade for older bikes, but any ignition that fits the crank taper will work(so it works on new stuff too). I do see that's a CDI-based mag so it's potentially better than a stright old school magneto/coil only setup. What you will lose is whatever custom mapping (timing curve) KTM has in the CDi built for your engine. You can try swapping in the coil and/or CDI from your 380 to troubleshoot. If neither/both don't fix it, it's your stator.

i cant swap the parts from my 380.....i no longer own it. a buddie bought it. i have it at my shop, but i dont think he would like me robing parts from it! .........plus its a whole diff setup. i can go with the stock parts for a little over $500? im begining to think thats what ill do. i love the way it "did" run before .......what would you do? besides sell it

How is it a whole diff setup? Most any coil/CDI from any 2-cycle should work enough for troubleshooting. Hate to see you spend $500. Check ebay for ignition?

96 was the last year of the "sems" setup................97 had a different flywheel, stator, coil, and a ignition box..........the sems only had a flywheel, stator, and a coil WITH the cdi built into it. .........so the coil wont work, and the stator wont work ....."UNLESS" you change the whole setup. if i do that i wont know what is bad anyhow.

i had a guy call me today and has all the parts to change it over to 97 "new" style ......picking the stuff up saturday.

i learnt along time ago that when you own a ktm..........always keep a good spare bike to ride! thats why i still have the good ol xr 400

got it running again! ........only thing is, im having to rejet it and had to go from a 175 main to a 185 main.......moved the needle one clip. is this because its fireing much better? or is my timing to high? i have adjusted it some, but still playing with everything.

Could be. How much has the air density changed where you live since the last time it ran well?

maybe 20 colder? ......im gonna mess with the timing some more saturday.
