2000 KX250 basket case rebuild in progress..

Post by Actionman »

I bought a 2000 kx250 from a friend that had sat outside for years. $200 later and I was regretting buying it! Anyway, I've finished the complete frame rebuild and thought I'd share
When I bought it: Image

New parts:
Linkage bearings/seals
Front/rear wheel bearings and seals
Front/rear brake pads plus complete disassembly and cleaning.
Steering bearings.
Shock bumper, seals, bushings and oil
Fork bushings/seals/oil (I had to buy another set of forks due to a broken pinch bolt so I built a nice set from both)
New plastic
Graphics
2001 cr125 front brake line to eliminate the under-fork stock kx brake routing
Wrapped the air box and tank in faux "carbon fiber" texture vinyl
New levers and grips
I basically cleaned and polished every nut and bolt on the bike and cleaned out all the receiving threads as well. The engine needs a crank, piston (cylinder has a new iron liner unfortunately), and clutch plates. I'm swapping out fifth gear for a 2003 kx250 fifth gear because it's over driven; I can then add four teeth to the rear to compensate for the tall first gear
I may do the 98 kx first gear swap (which Is lower ratio) and the 03 fifth to kind of emulate a kdx tranny. Won't need to add the four teeth then. I'll only have about $850-950 in the bike when I'm finished! I've referenced all bearings and seals for cut rate prices and saved a ton. I also had a bunch of new parts like levers, two complete spec bolt kits, and even the brake pads that came from my stash of parts which saved me money. I have an uncoated pro circuit works pipe and silencer to go on it as well. It's basically gong to be a showroom new 2000 kx250 when I'm done. I'm excited to have a transmission suited to woods riding as well since my 97 rm250 wore me out in the woods due to the tall first gear. I'll put up more before and after pics when it's all done in a month or two . Thanks for reading my giant wall of text lol.
