86 KDX mods

Post by pkenney »

Getting ready for riding season on this 32 year old bike. It has come a long way looking at the Before/After photos.
Finished the mods at the beginning of 2017 and spent a lot of time on the fork valving last year.
I finally have them to a point where I can say they are much better than the stockers.
The 48mm KYBs, rear wheel, and brakes are 2002 KX125 items.

Other mods are:
2003 KDX flywheel (rotated stator plate)
IMS footpegs
Lengthened clutch actuator 1/4"
EBC 4469 CK KLX300 clutch plates (not happy with this but they fit so I tried them)
Tusk 18" rear hoop
Trailtech 12V regulator (floated stock lighting coil-plenty of power for LEDs)
Trailtech Striker

Yes I know I would have been better off on a newer bike but it is a kick to ride and once I started its hard to stop.

Rear fender is from a donor 2002 KX125 cut to fit against the seat. Front is KX too.
I cut the grab rails and made some new tubes that bulge outwards to clear the fender.
They work pretty well as handles like that.

Looks great. Here is my 88. Stock except for an FMF pipe and an H-series carb. It looks like yours ended up with an 88 unpainted cylinder. Mine ended up with an 87 painted cylinder. We should trade.

New number plate backgrounds, new front brake pads, cleaned up the rims. A little steel wool and some touch-up paint
The white units had there own tank graphics. I'm thinking that those are going to be impossible to find.
May have to improvise.
Anyway, here's some pics.

Thanks for the photos, I dig the white KDXs, hang onto that one.
On the carb, you used an H model? Was it a direct replacement?
I need to look into the 88 manifold and airbox boot to open up my options.
Rubber parts for the 86 are hard to find also but I think I remember finding repros available.

The h-series carb fits fine, but like has been said in your other thread, the choke and air screw are lacking the access lever from the right side. Not really a problem though. The 88 Keihin is a one off and is tough to find.
