KIPS timing 200C

I recently purchased an 87 KDX200c with a tired motor. Sent the motor to a local shop where a friend with 40+ years of experience to go through the engine. Sent the jug out for replating, mew piston, seals, etc... Gave him the factory shop manual as well. According to him, using instructions from the manual, the kips valves are closing as the rod pulls out, and wide open with the rod in, which is the opposite of every other motor he's assembled in the past. Does the rod work opposite in this motor, or are the instructions for assembly backwards?

Could he have the valves switched, right vs left?

I thought of that too, according to the manual, number of grooves in top of valves, he has it correct

I'm not familiar with the C series, but the factory manuals have been wrong before.

The first version of the 1995 manual was wrong.

I am only sure of one thing. With only two valves, no flapper and only one rod, it won't take long to figure out. :grin:

I found that too.

Using the manual and checking the operation, they seemed arse about and l spent a lot of time trying to work out how l was doing it wrong.

In the end l set them up visually so they worked correctly because the workshop manual setup didn't seen right.

Question: Is the KIPS system designed for increased low end or top end power?
The passages should open as the revs rise correct?

With the shaft extended the alignment dots should be facing the front of the cylinder.
With the shaft all the way in the dots are at 9:00 looking from the intake side.
This is the way mine are set...but then again it does not have much low end power so maybe I have it wrong.
Not trying to confuse the OP but my setup does seem to contradict the manual.

The valves open above 6000rpm and give you a boost of top end power. If they don't open, the power just kind of falls off at that 6000.

Thanks for the confirmation.
I'm curious what the affect would be if they were set the way the manual says.
The ports would be open at low revs and close at high revs - more torque?
If I had some spare head gaskets I might try this.
I'm always looking for more torque and would trade some top end.

If your valves were working opposite of the way they were designed, it would kill the bottom and the top end power. Motor would be a total turd.
