6v vs 12v

Post by jtubman »

I just picked up an 87 kdx200. wanted to confirm its 6v not 12v. was also curious on how that would affect the brightness of a headlight vs a 12v kdx.

i havent torn into the bike yet but it currently runs very well. It has led lights that arent currently working. i know this bike didnt have a voltage regulator. will i need one to get them working?

If its anything similar to an 1985 wiring..which it may not be..idk... I can help. Mine is street legal with the tusk enduro lighting kit. If you have an upgraded stator, you will need an AC voltage regulator. From there, you need to purchase a rectifier. This will convert the AC to DC. Then connect rectifier to battery. It will charge the battery. Then you just need to wire in your lights/switches anyway you like directly to the battery.

its "6v" at idle on depending on RPM it can make an excess of 12v. Also you need a reg/rec to run anything other than the regular bulbs. a battery would help alot as well.

Awesome you guys answered everything.

I plan on street registering this over the winter here in Rhode Island. Ill be getting a tusk dual sport kit and a polisport mmx headlight soon. I have a trail tech voltage regulator and 87 kx250 rear fender on the way.

itll need chain sliders soon and is missing that big chain plate ive seen on stockers. I eould like to get all new guards, and at that time ill be going through the entire swing arm and rear shock.

Dont worry I'll be posting a build thread. Very soon!

Look on ebay for reproduction chain sliders, about 40 bucks

Good luck on the build.

Supermoto polisport fender. Probably going to replace it with a 15 kx fender.

thought you all would appreciate an update. i bought a dual sport kit from tusk but i ordered the wrong one (without a rechargeable battery). i have the battery on the way but as it sits it has a trailtech vapor mocked up and the dual sport kit. i have a key switch and the front brake sensor to put on tomorrow. overall the kit was very easy to add. the rear fender is an 87 kx250 ufo fender. i made NO MODIFICATIONS to the fender. the front hole matched right up but i made holes for the rear mounts. pretty damn easy.
