1983 KDX 200 piston

Post by richep4012 »

I'm reading that it is close to impossible to find a piston for this year bike. Does anyone have a line on getting one? I read someone say a later model piston might work but very little info out there. Thanks for any help.

I know a guy that can cross reference pistons. Might even have a Wiesco on the shelf, since he has a lot of old stock.

I think pistons may be interchangeable in the air cooled engines but be aware the ring ends are different between years.

4 200 pistons that are clearly different. (The angles on the outer pistons skirts is due to the camera)
I've not spent much time comparing them.

I read somewhere that a 1995 kdx 200 piston will work with the 83-85 motors as long as it still has stock bore. Can anyone here confirm this?

The pistons are the same from 1990 to 2006. You might need to buy one and let us know

I would of thought that there would be a difference between air and water cooled versions?? :?

I have a very nice wosner that a guy from on here I think did a run of 10 a little while back, I also have a new genuine so hopefully these will last me for a while.

Mate who did the wosners did a run of ten of them, i think that was the minimum that they will do. they were all in standard bore size so the nikasil bore is the go to use them, i will be doing new electrosil when I fit one.

I was informed that the 86 onwards piston ring pin lines up with a cylinder port, maybe someone with the hardware can confirm or discount this. Geoff?? if you have an 86 piston to try in an 83-5 pot maybe you can let us know. I wouldn’t like to run an end gap through a port.

At first we were told that the skirt needed to be modified. A mate fitted one up to the rotating mechanism and confirmed that wasn’t the problem though.

Also there is something about late model rings, the bottom ring can be used in both top and bottom ring grooves on the earlier standard piston.

I will try and compare the 95' piston with the 83' as they are both in bits!!!

Good on ya Daxta, it would be good to know. if you can slip the late one into an 83 cylinder to check the ring ends would be good.

it would be easy if the latter one fit, you can find them at any corner store but an 83-5 is like digging up a diamond.

Righty ho, i have gotten around to comparing the two pistons with each other!! (1983 vs 1995) When i opened the 1983 up i checked the piston and inspected it and it was a 'ProX' piston (After Market) and it looked similar to the STANDARD 1995 Piston (which is the same 1995-2006). Both ring guides are in the same place, and majority of the cut outs and holes etc are the same. I was speaking to a mate that has experience with this type of thing and he said that he wouldnt think the Watercooled piston would be correct for the Aircooled engine because of what he called "expansion rates" i have not read up on this yet but as i said the two pistons that came out of each engine were near identical. The Pro X piston out of the 1983 i personally never rode the bike but i heard it running and it ran fine, so to sum it up personally i reckon that it would fit and it would run fine dont worry

I will post a picture when i figure out how!!!

Thanks for that info daxter.
I might hunt down a 95 piston for Mrs KDX's 200 Vinduro ride.
It is getting a bit tired and I have a sleeved Cylinder hanging around here so I think it might be time to go a re-bore on the cast iron and Ill see if I can find a late model piston to try in it.
Becouse its a cast iron job I wont be too concerned but I wont be putting one in a new nikasil at this stage.

Wiseco offers the same piston for 1986 - 2006 KDX200's.

If you pulled a Pro-X from a bike, how would you know it was supposed to be for a 1983?? Maybe someone just put a newer model piston in there.

Someone mentioned on a previous thread about pin placement and I think skirt length.

Yeah, with a 1983 model, there is not much room to be picky on a piston.

I have a Wiseco O/S piston for the '86 on in my '84. Skirt length is fine and it is the bottom ring peg only that gets uncovered over a port. BIG chamfer on said port is what I did. Can only see how it goes.
