I have an 04 RMZ250 that I'm playing doing a motor swap for a 2tt my first thought was kdx200 out 220. But I saw an air cooled and got to thinking about a super light wood bike. I'm just wondering if the air cooled engine is really up to bring ride for long periods.
My normal day ride is just under 60 miles lots of up and down and tight twisties where there isn't much air flow
Is the 88 engine up to xc gp series racing?

My riding buddies trail bikes are a 79? PE 400, an 86 XR 600 and a 78 YZ 490....NONE of them are water cooled and they seem to do fine.

To be fair, the 490 is a pretty notorious pinger.6 Riders wrote:My riding buddies trail bikes are a 79? PE 400, an 86 XR 600 and a 78 YZ 490....NONE of them are water cooled and they seem to do fine.
That said, hundreds of GP races have been won on air cooled bikes and air-cooled KDX engines are known to be fairly bulletproof.

Re: Is the 88 engine up to xc gp series racing?
I found a couple 88s for around 500 bucks complete so I guess i wouldn't be out too much if it didn't work anyway.
I just thought it would be cool to take a 208lb 4t pull the 70lb engine out and replace it with a 2t closer to 50lbs. I'm a realist im not planning on winning but I'd like to be competitive at least

I'll do a build thread when I get an 88. Probably in the next month or so, just busy with a newborn and the holidays. If anyone has one they'd like to donate to the cause pm me!
