UK 1998 KDX200C3 Resto

Post by Hail seizure »

Here are a few pics of my 1988 KDX200 C3. The bike is a UK spec model, so has a plastic tank(illegal in the UK in '88), no brake light, horn or indicators. No battery either, but has basic 6V lights run off a magneto.
Despite all this, the bike was registered for the road and I want to put it back on the road myself.
As you can see the bike is in pretty poor shape cosmetically but mechanically it's good as the previous owner
used it in vintage enduro events. The engine is strong and will lift up the front wheel easily.
Sounds like a bag of spanners though! Not used to air cooled 2 strokes.

Thanks! Planned mods include a rear disc conversion using an 1988 KX wheel and brake assembly.

Good luck with the build. The rear disc mod is a great idea.

Thanks! Not my idea though, Kawagumby on here gave me the idea.
Here are a few more pics. Bought a pair of KX125 wheels and am now
working out how to fit them. Why? Because I want 2 sets of wheels, 1
for on road and 1 for off road. Used KDX wheels are like rocking horse ****
over here in the UK, so KX wheels it is.

Pic of KDX front wheel(right) and KX125.

KDX has a 15mm dia front spindle, KX is 17mm, so new bearings required.

Also looking at getting the lights working, I need a lighting coil as mine has been removed.
Possibly a 12V conversion as well.

Thanks! I'll take you up on that then. I have just bought a Trail Tech adjustable regulator(12-16VAC).
I am looking for a lighting coil, what wattage should I be aiming for?
I will be running a 30W headlight and a 21/5W tail light.
Cheers Mike

Contact www.rickystator.com, as a guy there told me they could convert it to 12 volt and put out about 65 watts, as best I remember.

Been in touch with Ricky Stator, their upgraded coil is 65W and designed for 12V use.
They ship to the UK as well so I'm going to order one and covert the electrics to 12V.
In the meantime I've straightened the side stand bracket and painted the stand with
silver BBQ paint.

Good evening. Thanks for the update. Did they mention a rectifier (or whatever it is that the 1990 model has to keep from blowing bulbs like some here have mentioned?)

Some new bits came the other day. Chain Guards, O ring for the sprocket shaft and seals/caps for the KX rear wheel.

Had some spare time today so removed and stripped the motor.
Here's what I found, see pics also.
Cylinder Head - Looks ok but carbon deposits very black like it's been running rich?
Barrel (no picture) - Looks fine, so scores etc but will have to measure the bore.
Piston - A few scores and looks like blow by past the rings?
Crankcase - Looks like oil in the bottom? Crank seal gone?

What do you guys think?

Head looks like it has been run a long time.

Piston looks like it has been ran TOO long, as the rings allowed blow-by.

Is it just two-stroke oil in the bottom? It is supposed to have 2-stroke oil there. That little pool is what gets sucked up and slung around to lubricate the parts. After you shut off the engine, it drains back down into the bottom and pools up.

If you think it is from the right crankcase seal, then a vacuum / pressure test would have helped BEFORE disassembly.

Cool picture of the 2 chain guards. 1987 just had the plastic and in 1988, it went to the metal and plastic style. :boogie:

Well you know how it is! you have an hour to spare and next minute your engine is in bits!
New main bearings and crank seals are gonna be fitted.

Cylinder head has been blasted, looks good!

Reed valve assembly, plastic insert essential or potential restriction?
