1988 KDX 200 fuel
Need some input please. I bought this bike from a guy who was able to get a hold some leaded gasoline which he ran through it for years. The question I have is if I decide to run Unleaded gas through it, should I use a low octane or high octane fuel. I'm also reading that It's not good to put an ethanol additive in the premix. Thank you

I assume we can only get unleaded fuel...in the states, at least. All my toys and the Super Z get marine grade gas. 93 octane with no ethanol. Will they run o.k. on 87 octane with 10% ethanol? Yup, but I've seen pictures of what ethanol does to carb parts, so I don't use it.

Re: 1988 KDX 200 fuel
Generally, the highest octane you have availiable / can afford is the best option. I run 98 Octane in mine, the same fuel I run in my performance tuned 480hp car.

Re: 1988 KDX 200 fuel
keep in mind that fitter and Josh are a few miles apart and they might use different metering techniques to get their numbers
at a US pump 91 is the highest you can get, in Europa 98 (I believe) but they are the same grade, just measured different
kinda like trying to figure out the difference between a yard and 3 feet
(along the same line of thinking, Josh's performance car is a ford so that HP number isn't Horse Power like on a MOPAR but only Half Power )
Josh is right though, pick the highest grade you can find, pick a good oil, a good ratio, jet accordingly and STICK WITH IT
(on my plated KDX the different on fill ups between the cheapest grade and the highest grade is less then 60 cents, if I cant afford that I probably shouldn't be out riding)

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll go with the high octane with no additive.

Re: 1988 KDX 200 fuel
Interesting. Here 98 is the highest mostly, and called Ultimate, or ultra premium (one brand has 100 but it's commonly believed to be worse than most 98's). 95 Octane is called Premium, and it's fairly common to be recommended in normal standard cars (as it often is cheaper to run despite being more expensive to buy). Then there is 91, and a 91 with 10% ethanol.diymirage wrote:keep in mind that fitter and Josh are a few miles apart and they might use different metering techniques to get their numbers

Re: 1988 KDX 200 fuel
I run 89 in my bike. I think I'll start using 91 this season from Petro-Can. I was conflicted as to how 2 stroke responds to high octane fuel but logic always told me like high compression/high revving engines, high octane would be the way to go. Also should keep things good and clean.
I still haven't seen that Falcon yet...Go over to the 4x4 thread and post it pleaseJoshmcmillan wrote:Generally, the highest octane you have availiable / can afford is the best option. I run 98 Octane in mine, the same fuel I run in my performance tuned 480hp car.

Re: 1988 KDX 200 fuel
premium unleaded is a common recommendation
diymirage, octane rating in USA and EU is different, (look up RON+MON/2 for USA)
Also, 91 is the highest in your area, not all over the USA, 87/91/93 in Alabama (RON+MON/2)
