Hey all,
So I bought my 92 dx200 in awful condition, on somewhat of a whim/personal challenge.
Fast forward 6 months, and I've got it all rebuilt and running RIDICULOUS fast.

Rebuilt engine by Millenium Technologies, including NICASIL lining, case matching, port and polish, rebuilt crank, new bearings and seals everywhere, wiseco piston, BDK steel KIPS valves.
New k760 rear tire, chain, fresh fluids all around, new steering stem bearings with marine grease, rm250 front end with forks totally rebuilt by ZR1 racing, fmf gold pipe. Stock carb cleaned and working great, oem reeds. D'Flex hand guards, UFO headlight/tail fender,
Hydraulic brake light switch installed and LED 1157 tail light and mirror mount so it is ready to be street legal where possible.
After all that building(which was fun), and all that money(which far exceeds the value of the bike), what do you guys think is reasonable price to ask for it?
IT'S TOO MUCH BIKE FOR ME! I'm actually scared to ride it. It has less than 5hrs on the rebuild.

Thoughts?

Come on Friedom. Too much bike... It's all in the right wrist. You ought to try my KTM 380. Things can happen in a hurry if your not careful

I realize there's a learning curve with anything. It's just terrified me enough times, and I'm losing time for and interest in the sport so my motivation is waning. And I could use a little less credit card debt.

If the bike is too fast, put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it. That will reduce the feeling of too much power.
If you MUST sell it, it's worth between $1000-$1500 depending on your location and the buyer. I personally would not pay more than $1100 for it and I live in an area where KDXs sell for a premium.

R u srs? There's a running 84 for sale here for over 800. I was hoping this was worth 2k atleast. But it's a quarter century old, so I guess there's a limit on these things.
Don't really want to part it out. We'll see. A buddy just let me know he got accepted into the Baja rally on his 640A. Guess we have some training to do, we'll see how things pan out.

Considering our area, I would say the best you could hope for is about $1300.

Now, after all that work, your going to get out of riding? Why are you losing interest? Do you need new areas to ride? Do you need more technical stuff or more wide open terrain? Need someone to ride with or a different group?

Here in Tennessee, a really clean low hour H series is gonna bring about $1800-$2200. I haven't seen any clean E series advertised around here but I'd imagine they'd bring significantly less.

I see H series 200s above 2k and sometimes over 2500 around here. Meh

That's crazy. The engine work and suspension cost more than that.
But I didn't get into this to make money.

As for my why, all of those are elements, but there really just isn't time for it these days.

I'd still love to get that trail tech from you though, to keep track of hours.

Projects cost money you will NEVER recoup. Ask me about my $15,000 RD350 LC that I can't sell for $3,500. I bought my street-titled 1989 E series in mint condition with a new rebuild and tons of aftermarket goodies AND a running parts bike for $1,050. My experience is that there is very little interest in what people consider an old 2-stroke playbike, they want open piped four-strokes sounding like flatulent gorillas that can't go ten minutes in the woods without overheating.

The trick to selling that at a good price will be to find a buyer who is specifically looking for an E series KDX in great shape. It will be worth more to the right buyer. You could be waiting a long time for that, though.

I see. Might be worth more in trade, too. Maybe someone has a 1200$ welder that he's asking 2500 for but willing to trade. Haha!

After doing all that work....and only be able to get $1500 max out of it....I'd have to enjoy for a while before I gave it up.

Seems to be a concensus here: It's a good bike with no market. Oh well, there are worse problems to have!

Thanks for the input guys. Someone offered yesterday to trade for a 92 cr250.
No thanks.. last time I rode one of those it had a binary throttle - only two positions - idle and scream.

Haha, yep! I had a '75 CR250, the throttle on that bike was just an on/off switch and that's the bike I really learned to ride on. You should ride an open class bike, CR480/500, KX500, YZ490, those will make you love your KDX

Have you thought about just dialing the KDX back a bit until you get comfortable on it? There are several things you can do. Keep KIPS closed, run the stock pipe, etc. It really is about as mild as you can get for a full size 2 stroke. Even a 125 has more hit to it than a KDX. There are also needles you can run that will smooth it out even further. DGK is a good match for your e series that has a smooth transition from mid to high.

I don't think most understand the impact that proper / or improper jetting can make. Example I have an 00 KTM 300 and 01 380. Both are known (stock) for being finicky bike to ride... With the stock needle they are a handful to ride... too much of a light switch power band... But with a change of the needle and some new brass they've really become ***** cats.. (at least until you really twist the happy stick a bit too much) :shock: :oops: I've jetting mine (the 380) to be four strokish... Smooth power from bottom up to HOLY CHIT!!! :lol:

Changing out the needle is a quick easy way to modify the power delivery to suit your riding style and terrain. It does take a little time and effort to find the sweet spot, but once you do... it's well worth the effort.

Part of my challenge is that I'm used to being able to find the limit of bikes with reasonable safety. Just have to respect the KDX a little more.

Well I actually took it out for a trail ride today. Had a blast. Is the jetting normally finicky with these? Best throttle response was from cracked to 3/4. Any more than 3/4 didn't really do anything. It's odd, because last time I tried full throttle I could find the top end of the pull before I ran out of open road. Now it doesn't pull any more beyond 3/4. It's humid and rainy today, would that do it?
