1994 KDX 200 enging running backwards

She stopped while riding like it fouled a plug. Spewed a little oil from the case breather tube. Now she runs in reverse. Kick start or bump start, same. Spins the tire backwards. Most wierd. I cant be only one in the history of KDX. It ran flawless for the last five years.

Thoughts where to begin? Tranny problem?

Flywheel key or timing.

I agree, most likely the Flywheel key. A 2t engine can run backwards if you change the spark timing.

Flywheel Key.

Thanks. I will look and see. Do I need a special puller?

Yes, you'll need a flywheel puller. I got mine on ebay, but any parts store should have them. It's 27mm x 1.0 LH thread.

Going to move this to the E series section :).

95-06 = H
89-94 = E

final question, mine has the inverted forks, 94 or 95?

93 or 94.

any reason the inverted forks were only short lived?

Not sure. Those particular forks were really not an improvement over the conventionals. Same internals, just flipped upside down. Perhaps a little less flex and obviously less underhang. They couldn't make the kdx TOO good, else they would have lost sales on the KX, lol. Someone had thrown a set of 94 USDs on my 89 before I got it. They worked well on the single track, but made me nervous as hell trying to ride fast on open trails.

As far as your KDX running backwards, buddy of mine had the same prob with his old IT 175. Turned out that the stator plate shifted off timing. Which is weird cause it didn't move that much. Wouldn't think thatit would make it run backwards. Just make sure the timing marks are In sequence. Good luck!

So, how can the kicker start the engine in reverse? I would think it could only if it gave a major kick-back when it started.

Exactly. As soon as it "catches" the engine kicks back the other way.
