Sadly there are lots of old beasts we regret letting go - I can remember RGV250's being hard to get rid of for a couple of hundred, now they're going for up to 5K.
We do get a lot of buffaloes through the workshop these days because of our long-term project to create replica engines of the TR750 (the motoGP version of the buffalo of the day). Our goal is to end up with 130+bhp at the rear wheel so far our limit has been 118.
Combine that with 70's handling and you get a very exciting ride. :)

Was only shortly after you began the part-out, Brock proposed these at the end of January...talk about adding insult to injury after losing the GG! Some tough luck right there

Steel KIPS valves finally coming - sorry for the wait

Post by nickisme123 »

Hi guys. Is there still a way to get these made? I pulled the head off of my KDX last night after a lengthy process of fixing it from all the neglect it received before i got it. I was greeted by the lovely sight of shavings of alloy and half of one of the valves with the teeth stripped off and somehow sideways in its hole. Any info on how to obtain these would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Nick.

Hi guys,

I keep getting reminded of how behind we are with these. We've made another test set and have arranged with a local chap to bring his bike down so we can test them out and check all is good (we had to give the last barrel and rack back). Should do this sometime later this week and then we'll be able to sort the main prod. Grateful for your patience.

Very cool.

I do wonder if there may be any unintended consequences though. Could they wear the bores in the jug out?

Kawasaki themselves made steel versions for the very late KMX200 and we have been selling steel replacements for the KMX200 for a couple of years now with no known issues.
When it all gets hot in there it is possible that there will be a little more clearance than there used to be as steel expands less quickly than ally; but we'd say this is a good thing as the valve is not cooled and sitting in the hot exhaust gas whilst the barrel is cooled by the water behind it. This combination could lead very rapidly to binding of the valve when hot especially with carbon build-up.
The valves themselves are fairly well lubricated with unburnt 2-stroke oil in general and nothing in their construction would lead to increased abrasion.
It will still be important to regularly remove and clean your valves though as carbon will still build up and eventually cause them to bind and at that point the weakest link will give albeit at a later stage. There are plans afoot to make control racks for the KMX200 and the KDX but that is another fairly long wait away.
All the best,
Brock

He has yet to turn up, but then he works offshore and gets called out at a moment's notice so that may have happened.

I will chase both him and see if the other guy who initially lent us the rack and his barrel can be of service at the moment.

Why not send out a couple set of test sets to those who have pre-ordered them? Preferably to someone in the U.K or continental Europe, such as Frenche200( thought I am not sure if he has pre-ordered)..

Shipping, I assume would not be very much. That seems much more logical to me

@frenche - les valves, rod-governor, collar-valve - tout ce qui retient le rod-governor.

@Gotanubike - We did think of this but there is a whole issue there of identifying critical vs non-critical issues, measuring and communicating. This approach has never paid off for us.
