Steel KIPS valves finally coming - sorry for the wait

Post by TheRadBaron »

Just placed a preorder. Thanks for developing these. The KIPS subvalves are really the only weak links in an otherwise brilliant motor. Hopefully these eliminate that problem altogether.

Yes the exchange rate does suck, but then it usually does for USD. The shame is the amount we all get bent over by the banks and paypal via crap exchange rates, percentage charges etc - not really sure how to fix that in any way we can make use of. For the European customers we now have a Euro bank account which should be up and running shortly where we can accept bank transfers at a better exchange rate than they can get and not have to pay bank charges for currency exchange which the banks put on top. We'll have to look at how hard or otherwise it is to open a USD account - the trouble is if you get a USD account that's run in the UK they want to charge you every month for the damned thing and I'm guessing to set up a bank account in the US you actually need to front up and prove who you are in the usual way?

HAH try 1 to .52

The price really isn't bad when you take away shipping and value added tax, the price actaully looks pretty good compared to the stock valves, idler + collars/bushes

Brock, any updates on the valves?

why were they made of aluminum in the first place?
1) to make money on parts sales
2) to match the aluminum cylinders expansion rate
3) to break or strip if the valve gets stuck
4) ? any other ideas?

Cheaper to manufactaure
Lighter, maybe quicker action

Steel has a lower thermal expansion so that should eliminate the chance of them getting jammed because of that

Waiting for my sample set to come back from the platers, expecting them back very soon at which point I can check them in this guy's barrel and get the ball rolling on the big run. Not long now.

In answer to why aluminium I would answer; (2) same expansion rate, with the goal of keeping everything nice and tight and reduced weight when compared to steel. That and the fact that they were sort of repeating what they had done before but likely didn't put much thought into the fact they were increasing the surface area of the drum part that sits in the muck significantly over the 125 valves whilst not increasing the amount of tooth engagement or shaft width by anything like a proportionate amount.

One last question, What is VAT? is that a tax? Do I need to pay that if buying from another country? I was about to buy just now, but 20 pounds extra is kind of steep before shipping. Thanks.

Yes VAT is tax - Value Added Tax - it means not the robbing out of your wages but the robbing at the spending end, nothing like taxing you twice unless of course you can squeeze a third, fourth or even fifth round in.

You don't need to pay this if you are outside of Europe.
If you fill in your address details the webshop should automatically deduce whether or not you are a VAT payer.

If it does not then please let me know so that I can correct this at the earliest opportunity.

Yea just register an account first in their webshop and after you enter your location with your registration, the VAT should not be included in the total.

Thanks man, but won't accept my Address for Japan or US. The US selection does not allow AP(Armed forces Pacific) for the state and the choices for Japan are ?? and ??? and if I pick either it pops up a window telling me to select a state before continuing.

Just went to the site to order, says "out of stock". Are these still available? If so, when? Thank you.

Been waiting on updates for a while now as many have these pre-ordered, and they were supposed to be available at the beginning of the month. Guess they're busy? Brock will surely chime in with some news sometime soon..

Steel KIPS valves finally coming - sorry for the wait

Post by Brock@BDK »

Yes sorry guys as per usual we're being pulled from pillar to post.

Made our first set of these, tested them on our friend Graham Ogden's barrel and control parts and found that there were some errors in our design, which there was always a risk of because the teeth on these valves don't seem to have any simple relationship to the valve position as is the case on the KMX.

As it turns out we were a fair few degrees out.

I am very sorry to those who have pre-ordered that I am running behind schedule. Be assured that your money is safe and can be refunded on request no problem. We are only 3 people and most of the time we are under pressure for the other work we are doing (and often late on).

We were happy to see one of our latest 110bhp GT750's go out the door this week with 16kg removed from engine and battery alone, along with another GT750 special. This might not float your boat but I've attached pics not only of the sample valves so you can see we are doing something but also the two GT's that went out.

All the best,

Brock

Thanks for the update. Personally, I don't mind the wait. I'd much rather wait a while to get a properly developed piece than one that was rushed to production. Thanks again for doing the heavy lifting, Brock. Those Buffaloes look incredible, too!

My oh my! Those are two gorgeous buffalos! My first bike was a GT380 and I wish I'd not let it go. They next owner just beat the thing into smithereens. There's a local 750 for sale for a while http://boise.craigslist.org/mcy/4908944513.html

I pre-ordered a set and don't mind waiting at all.
Being such precision parts, already problematic from the factory, it's more important these sub valves get done right. Thanks for the update.
